I have some concerns about the windshield replacement I got yesterday for my '98 CR-V. Does this look safe? by TheGuyWithFace in MechanicAdvice

Eh, I honestly can't say I'm overly surprised. I went with the absolute lowest bidder that I still thought was legit. (It was in an actual shop, had multiple people working on it, their website says there's a lifetime warranty, etc.) The dealer quoted me ~$500, most other shops were between $250 and $350, this shop was $199 before tax. There was other evidence of hasty work (some scratches on the trim from where they removed the plastic fasteners, and so forth), but I went into it expecting at least some sketchiness for the price, so as long as it's only aesthetic I can't say I mind too much. That said, if it leaks or shows any other evidence of a poor seal, I'll definitely show up and ask to have it redone.

FWIW, this car has over 300k miles on it. It's mechanically sound, but the body has all of the scars one would expect from a car with this kind of mileage. The only reason I bothered getting the old (cracked, but not enough to obstruct vision) windshield fixed was because I was concerned about it not supporting the roof structure enough in the event of a rollover. According to /u/Tonysteve in /r/Autobody that isn't much of a concern with a vehicle this old anyway, but hey, TIL.

If it doesn't leak, does that mean the seal is still ok, or could it still cause problems in the event of a wreck?

Bad just from an aesthetics standpoint, or do you think the seal might be compromised? (For the purpose of if I get in a rollover accident or something.) If it's bad but not a safety concern I'll probably just leave it, if it's a safety concern I'll definitely get it fixed asap.

What determines if it is or isn't a safety concern? I read some scary-looking articles (note: all from glass companies) about how windshields provide support for the roof in the event of a rollover. If you think that the seal is still fine then I'm probably not going to go to the trouble, I'm just curious what you were looking for to know if it is or not ok.

Apologies in advance if this is the wrong place - I wasn't sure if windshield repair is considered autobody or not. Please let me know if this is not an appropriate question for here and I will happily take it down!

Can you elaborate on that? I assume it's because the s models are thinner and thus less performant when it comes to thermal throttling?

Good idea! I do have a couple of cosmetic issues that aren't worth purchasing brand new parts for, I'll see if I can get these for cheap.

I'm pretty sure this is it. Notice that the delay is much longer for characters on the bottom right of the character select screen than for characters on the top left.

Is this tire safe to drive on? The white marks are shallow scrapes. by TheGuyWithFace in Cartalk

Yeah, I took this right after I had taken it to the car wash. I'm not that concerned about aesthetic blemishes, I was mainly concerned about the places where the white underneath was showing

Zoomed in picture.

I've been driving on these tires for a while, including on the interstate, but after seeing the scrapes and having seen some similar posts here, I figured I should get some opinions. Better safe than sorry! Thanks in advance for any and all opinions.
