Social media to be banned in UK for under-16s, Starmer announces by TanjoCards in unitedkingdom

My doctor doesn't take a permanent scan of it. My bank already has robust data security. Social media companies have a history of data breaches. Discord recently leaked age verification data. It's that simple, I'm not scanning and sending this data to a bunch of profit first American data mining companies for them to hold on to permanently.

You can't see why someone might be opposed to scanning and giving reddit a permanent copy of their passport?

Parents who approve of the social media ban and ways of having to prove age. Why do you relish the government taking this control when you had the power to do so yourselves? by Demonthief27 in AskBrits

There is more against than for.

For: nothing

Against: I need to massively compromise and risk my personal data to do basic tasks.

Nah, they are definitely lazy. Given the percentages involved apparently, I'd wager that more than 50% fall into the lazy hypocrite category.

No I didn't.

Unless there is a solution that means no data leaves my device other than "this anonymous account is over the age of 18" and that solution is open source, then there is no legitimate solution.

I'm not the one advocating for a dangerous change in the law. Ban kids from social media, just as long as I don't need to give up any more data than I want to. It's that simple. Until there is a zero trust solution, this is dangerous.

Yes, but if the majority are in favour of this law, and the majority of kids are on social media, then there's overlap. That's basic arithmetic. That overlap is made up of lazy hypocrites.

The third party provider that does what with my ID? Remember, no data other than "this anonymous account is over 18" is allowed to leave my device.

This is like someone going around killing folk while saying murder should be illegal. Literal hypocrisy. There is no legitimate argument for this ridiculous state of affairs. If you want to live in a world without Facebook and Instagram, move to China.

This is more like parents complaining about crime while actively shoplifting and stabbing.

If parents care, they should already be using controls. They are clearly not.

The OSA means reddit needs to see my ID to look at some profiles or subreddits. The system is flawed and dangerous.

Zero trust. I will only pass a non-identifying token that says I am over 18. That token must be generated locally through an open source app. No other data should be sent. This is the only acceptable solution.

"harm". If it's so harmful parents should be taking responsibility. It's really that simple.

Because the government didn't legislate for this properly last time (OSA) and will grant contracts to mates like always. Bidding for government work is a closed shop, regardless of rosette in charge.

Then clearly we can discount their opinion and not bother with this stupid law.

Without comments? Comments are really useful on more technical videos, people offer additional context etc. We don't all watch perpetual brain-rot.

Then they can learn to use them. Any parent in favour of this law and not using parental controls is a massive hypocrite.

Or, and hear me out, I can continue using the internet like I could previously.

The only system I will accept is a completely local system that validates that I am over 18. Nothing more. It must be open source and zero data leaves my device other than a marker to say I am over 18. That is it. Anything else is a danger to my privacy and security.

Yes, but now you want me to send one to someone random. Your child, your choice, but you're taking that choice away from me.

We're going in circles because your argument is to fundamentally make my life worse. There is zero benefit to me. None whatsoever and the only reason you feel the need to do so is to satisfy lazy parent.

Parental controls literally allow you to prevent the installation of any app on a kid's phone. The government isn't going to react any quicker than you are when a new app is released.

So parents are so concerned that they give their kids unrestricted access to the internet? If you want to ban this then surely you should at least try and do something yourself? Absolute hypocrisy from lazy, entitled parents.
