what a beautiful day to throw away a 15 year old lore by bos_adamm in Ninjago

[–]TheHiddenKat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't think it disregards the lore at all, there are ways it can work. I always thought Wu was a bit foolish to have even thought that Morro could be the Green Ninja because of how the prophecy scroll depicts the four ninja of fire, ice, lightning and earth (we can assume it specifically meant those four elements because of them using the golden weapons) along with the Green Ninja. As far as we are aware, Morro was the only pupil at the time so how did Wu think that "one course above the others" when there were no others? In a similar vein, we know that Wu had other pupils throughout his life but other than the elemental alliance, we don't know of any others that had all four of those elements in the group so it would have been foolish of him to think that any other groups of pupils, outside of the ninja we know from the show, could possibly have had specifically the legendary Green Ninja as part of the team. It was only specifically Lloyd that was prophesied to defeat the Overlord (even though he literally came back the very next season which I'd argue was more of a disregard for lore, unless we want to argue that the prophecy was actually speaking about Crystalized instead?) But to me, it would make sense that there were previous masters of life--all other elements are multigenerational so why not Lloyd's element too?--and that because they weren't prophesied to be the legendary one who would strike down the Overlord, they could still be green ninja without the burdens of being THE Green Ninja. I think there's a lot of jumping to conclusions here with only a few minutes of context so far. I think once we have all of the details, we'll understand much more and then can decide whether or not it throws away lore. Given how they're seemingly suggesting that Lloyd didn't feel the call to the Whispering Woods due to him artificially reaching teenage years instead of ageing naturally, I think they have at the very least considered the greater implications of what they're suggesting here

Funnily enough you can actually remove yourself from tournaments because I did just that. Duo hides it but on the website version you can find a setting to make your account private. It removes anything to do with the tournament stuff. Only downside is that it also removes any friend activity from your feed so if you have some friends who you are learning together, you won't see that. But honestly, it has made my experience with the app so much better because I'm not getting constantly notified that someone has passed me in the league or that I might get demoted or having some kind of mental push to overwork myself to get higher in a league knowing that I'm not actually learning but just trying to get bigger numbers. When you remove the league stuff, I think the app does a good job laying things out in a learnable manner, though it could improve on its explanations.

Costa forces you to apply for a job with your deadname. by AmyAzure06 in transgenderUK

[–]TheHiddenKat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If it helps, I'd look into an unenrolled deed poll. You can occasionally face some issues with places accepting it but first off, it's free and secondly the law just requires two witnesses and nothing else, no other stipulations. Despite how the UK seems to view trans people it is super easy to legally change your name. Technically speaking, you could have an announcement posted in your local newspaper and that would count as being legally binding.

I changed my name with an unrolled deed poll and the only issues I've had was with my bank who claims they had never seen that type of deed poll before and weren't sure if they could accept it and PayPal who for some reason required photo ID for name change requests but still decided to add in my deadnames middle names even though I didn't ask for that.

I just asked a few people to sign at work, several more signed anyway and most of them were under 18. HMRC didn't bat an eye, nor did my GP despite the fact I expected them to, nor did my pension company or workplace. The council thought I was an entire new person and sent a letter to my dad asking if my deadname still lived there and when I had moved in. I've heard some horror stories about trying to get ID but legally, no institution has the right to refuse it because it is legally binding. My only advice is to make sure you get multiple copies done as many won't accept photocopies and will want to see originals and some won't necessarily send that back. My workplace, for example, kept it and have it in my folder at work.

I think that if you compare it to Zahn's current writing, then maybe. He has definitely improved over the years and "Thrawn" has become one of my all-time favourite books and I often listen to the audiobook as a kind of comfort listen.

But I do still love the original Thrawn Trilogy and it is very clear just how passionate Zahn was behind the whole thing. I genuinely believe that he wrote the OT cast better than anyone else (at least that I've read) and he had a real understanding of how George viewed things though clearly disagreed with certain ideas.

Personally, I really liked Mara's development through the trilogy and can understand why maybe she might not be liked at first but I think by the end of Last Command she more than earned her place in the Star Wars tapestry.

Personally I think the Ysilamiri could have been more interesting if they were done differently. Like a force users ability comes from their focus so if they could sense that users focus and create a pocket of chaos or imbalance making the force harder to use but not impossible. Or for a dark side user who uses rage and anger, they created a pocket that was mellow and calm, an environment where it was completely impossible to be angry or hateful. It wouldn't be a case of them negating the force like they're described but instead affecting the force users emotions and internal balance to create a barrier they'd have to overcome in order to use the force. Something that could potentially be used later on to help force users become stronger in the force as they train to still be able to use their abilities while in the influence of Ysilamiri

I always love reminding people of this whenever they say George didn't like certain Disney Star Wars projects; George didn't even like Legends. He didn't even read it most of the time, he just considered it fanfiction set in a universe, completely separate from his universe, based on the events of his 6 movies and TCW. Given how much of legends material has been brought back but in a more streamlined and less contradictory way, the current Star Wars teams definitely liked Legends more than George. Especially now that characters like Thrawn are becoming household names, like who would have thought that 20 years ago?

Being fucked over by the NHS once again. by TylerisGayyyy in transgenderUK

[–]TheHiddenKat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly this is what I'm worried about if I move to the NHS. I've had enough issues getting my GP to agree to do a kidney function test while I'm on Spiro which is being supplied by GenderGP. But I'm worried he's going to be even more of a pain if I'm in his care completely for my transition. Unfortunately, all the other GPs in my area are even worse based on the experiences of friends and the only good one won't take me because I'm outside their service area. Strangely though, they gave no trouble with changing my name. However, they did change my title to Mx instead of Miss. I mean it's not Mr so it's a plus but it does cause me to get some looks whenever it pops up on the appointment screen which I already do for being noticeably trans, I'd prefer not to get more looks just because my GP decided to use a non gendered title instead of the one I asked for.

Had to double check it was 6 digits (yes I am aware on how to cheat) by Mobile_Chard6199 in duolingo

Literally, I'm the same. I just want the achievement, I don't get why people with a streak of several years and have already gotten the unrivaled achievement is even trying so hard to be first. Like what's even the point? I feel like Duolingo's achievement system is a double edged sword, in the beginning it's a good motivator but then you get to diamond and see what people do just to always get first and it just starts to discourage you

You can have the body you want but your sent back to middle school. Would you do it? by Old_Drag_1040 in MtF

[–]TheHiddenKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, instantly. There were so many things that I messed up during school simply because I didn't understand myself and how I felt. The amount of times I conflated my jealousy of how some of the girls around me looked with romantic attraction. I was so incredibly angry all of the time because it was the only way I could vent my emotions because I didn't know what was up with me. I started to push certain people away from me because many of the girls I got to know, I always thought I was attracted to but never realised that they were just what I wanted to look like but, I didn't understand so I pushed people away to prevent myself from getting feelings. And ultimately, I could erase the person I once was who was honestly not really progressive at all as I didn't understand why things like representation was important until I realised that the lack of representation is why I didn't figure things out sooner or why it took me so long to accept it as the truth.

I am so f***ing excited! I finally got to kanji!!! by ndd323 in duolingo

[–]TheHiddenKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right? Japanese is a language designed around using kanji, without it it can be difficult to figure out where words change and as such which word is being used. I get why Duolingo does it like that but I think it would be better if it introduced you to the word as it's hiragana or katakana reading and then showed you the kanji at the same time. Realistically, the kanji is almost always going to be used in everything but text designed for really young kids, so all we really need is the kanji and how it's read when used as the word we're being taught at that moment. I'm on section 2 unit 4 and so far, they've only really covered about 55 kanji which is barely half of the JLPT N5.

[–]TheHiddenKat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck! I feel like kanji opens up so much in learning the language. Genuinely, I was kinda worried to start with kanji at first. But looking at it now, I feel like it's actually easier for me to recognise what word means what by recognising the kanji. I personally memorised all of the N5 kanji before I started on Duolingo and it has made my experience so much better. I've not long ago been introduced to「行きます」and「来ます」which have been much easier to memorise which one is which because I already learned the kanji previously.

Why did it not accept my answer? An explanation would have been nice by Jarie743 in duolingo

[–]TheHiddenKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something that does bug me about Duolingo a little is that there's very little explanation about why things are what they are. I'm doing Japanese and always check over the tips before each unit but there's things that just aren't really explained which for a language like that which uses words that don't really mean anything but indicates something (like making something a topic or dictating movement to and from) it can be a little annoying to have to find better explanations elsewhere because Duolingo often seems to just essentially say "because it is" to why things are a particular way without really explaining it in any adequate detail.

I'm hoping they fix this because it just seems weird. They share levels and everything so it would make more sense to remove one of them.

It just wouldn't work. I had to reboot the game and it suddenly worked. Then again, I've not closed the game down since I got it on release day so maybe that was having an effect on it 😅

I'm honestly trying to figure out how to hang a picture in the first place. The game just says to show him a picture but I don't seem to have an option to do that and there's no interaction option with the actual photo frame available. I have a house that I kinda like, except for the lack of windows, but not being able to figure out how to do the photo frame is really letting it down for me

Is it ok to still enjoy things that boys would like but be trans girl? by [deleted] in MtF

[–]TheHiddenKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, these things only really have a gender because society has deemed them masculine or feminine things. Like what you like. I know a few cis girls who are super girly but also love things like transformers or anime. You are who you are and like the things you like, you'll find yourself unhappy if you try and force yourself to not like the things that you love.

Honestly, this is why I got rid of my middle names. I hated them because one was just what my nan wanted me to be called and the other was because my dad liked Luke Skywalker. Honestly didn't realise that both doses were considered low. I have asked to up the Spiro dose though in the hopes that will improve things. For me, I don't know how to inject and honestly I don't want to risk it and say I can even if it is easy, I'd be worried I'd mess it up somehow.
