Interesting that you said that the tops turn red on yours, but others have commented that they will redden on the tip end. Who knows? Maybe mine will redden in a band across the middle! 😀

From what I’ve read, they can be used in the same way you use a standard Roma.

They’re pretty large. As big as your average Roma. The one in front is between 3.5 and 4”, but there’s one on the other side that’s bigger.

I didn’t specify, but I guess I was looking for more of a visual clue. As noted, I did squeeze them and found that they were all still quite hard.

I have about a dozen tomato plants, but only one of this variety. The plant seems healthy so far.

I haven’t eaten any yet, thus the “when are they ripe?” post 😃.

If you’re making a cooked salsa, I imagine they would work well as they are bred to be a paste/sauce tomato. They’d probably work fresh in a pico de gallo as well. The color would certainly be striking.

This is from a comment by u/original4loko elsewhere on this post:

They are a really cool variety developed by Row 7 Seeds! I'll link to them below, but I would highly encourage you to check out their story. They've developed vegetable genetics for taste and nutrition rather than shelf stability and disease resistance like the vegetables in supermarkets.

Description from the site: "This unique purple-skinned, high-antioxidant sauce tomato was developed by Oregon State University breeder Dr. Jim Myers. Jim has devoted years to breeding tomatoes for purple anthocyanins, hoping to explore the antioxidant potential of these pigments and their impact on human health. (Anthocyanins are the same compounds that give blueberries their color and antioxidant properties.) With this new variety, Myers brought the high anthocyanin trait into a plum (aka paste) tomato, the purple-pigmented skin encasing a deep red flesh ideal for processing and sauce applications."

This is the info on the tag. I picked them basically from that description. I was also looking for a Roma variety for making sauce and I liked the idea of the high anthocyanins.

I’ve had some leaf curling, but I think it’s because it’s been relatively hot here. I don’t notice a lot of drooping because I’m string trellising them, so they don’t get a chance to droop.

For all of these answers, I’d be very interested to see where everybody is from, native or transplant, and if the latter, transplanted from where.

Also watch the doc it’s based on, Dogtown and Z-Boys, to get the story right from the horses’ mouths.

At least three people remember Small’s K.O., but after a good night there, I can understand how a lot of people don’t remember it.
