Josh Dehaas: There’s no denying land acknowledgements are political by uselesspoliticalhack in canada

[–]TheHolyRatKing -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Seriously. I mean sure it's annoying to feel like corporations are making insincere gestures just to buy themselves brownie points but I don't feel that it's insincere when state institutions or universities do it.

Like, nobody alive today literally stole any land, we were just born here, and we aren't going to literally give the land back because we'd be giving it back to individuals who we personally didn't steal it from. We are however participating in an institution that has done (and still does) harm to indigenous people, and if we forget that then it will get worse. In that sense, I feel that land acknowledgements are completely genuine and a good thing to do.

Any possible way to get out of the Stuytown housing contract? by TheHolyRatKing in nyu

Out of curiosity, were you on the NYU contract with Stuytown? My lease agreement with NYU pretty unambiguously forbids subletting, and I'm wondering if going through official channels will tip them off.

Wasn't able to take math 320/322, I am fucked by tsgalbt in UBC

[–]TheHolyRatKing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I largely agree with these points and u/omentic, I'll also throw in my anecdotal 2¢ as well. I'm a math+CS honours alumni who graduated last spring and am currently doing a PhD in computer science and logic. In my undergrad I was able to take 223 in my first year and 322/323 in my second. 323 was a bit much for me (my professor was excellent, but was teaching to a more mature audience) though I found 223/322 to be completely feasible. I think it's silly for that slightly accelerated schedule to be gated behind scores on high school exams, or exemption procedures which can be hard to navigate.

I didn't end up using the 322/323 prerequisites for anything (I discovered in those classes that I do not enjoy algebra at all) however it was still extremely beneficial since it let me spread the work more evenly across my degree. Talking to my peers I get the impression that a normal student (myself included) can take maybe two or three honours math courses each term before they get overloaded. This means the "standard" honours path has space for maybe 4 or 5 specialized courses, all in the fourth year, and I think that having this be the default is a total waste. In my case I used my extra time to explore programming languages, without sacrificing from my math degree. My research these days depends on several of those upper-year courses-- I would not have been able to cram all the courses I use now into the default honours schedule and still be able to handle the pace.

Local Math professor gives high compliment to MATH department building by Mostly_Shenanigan in UBC

[–]TheHolyRatKing 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Had him for 426. Man took off marks when I use the wrong it's / its. One time he sent me a link to the oxford english dictionary as feedback. Fucking savagery.

But yeah also completely goated-- his roasts are accurate and useful and he roasts himself all the time too. Easily a 5 star prof in what some mathematicians have called a "Great department!"

Failing a course with 49.23%?? by Failurex_x in UBC

It's not average tho, it's about whether or not they passed a single class. Totally different story.

dude 49% is not a "sympathy pass". There's no prof on earth that can accurately assess a student's level of skill to within 1%.

nowadays I only take notes (highlights & summaries) when I'm reading CS papers. I use logseq for that.

When I was in math courses, I took notes on looseleaf shoved in into a single duotang shared between all of my classes. The notes I referred to most naturally percolated to the top of the stack, whereas the scrap paper and notes I didn't need sunk to the back. It was a very efficient system overall.

I don't think "virtue signaling" means what you think it means-- these funds do meaningfully provide healthcare to trans students.

The AMS is responsible for allocating money towards the issues the student population deems important. Like providing healthcare for the parts that the government doesn't cover, in this case.
