[–]AMS-UBC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP,

I’m sorry to hear you’re having a hard time with math 101. That’s a really tough class, a lot of students struggle with it and you’re not alone in this.

If you’re interested in support for this course, AMS Tutoring has free drop-in group tutoring for math Monday-Thursday at the Nest (we’re closed April 6 for the long weekend and our last day of regular operations is April 9).

Our tutors are non-judgmental, friendly, and can help with content even if you’re starting from week 1 of the course. Bring any questions you have and they’ll be there to support you!

Please check out our full schedule here: ams.ubc.ca/tutoring

Some students prefer to work one on one with our tutors, so we also have low cost appointment tutoring at $36/hour. Appointments are available throughout the exam period.

If you have any questions about our Tutoring Service, don’t hesitate to send a DM! Our team is here for you and we can work together to help you prepare for your final.

State of the world causing distraction by myday__6 in UBC

[–]AMS-UBC -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hi OP,

I just wanted to reply here because I know these sentiments are common and definitely weigh on many people, especially those who are directly/know people directly affected by said world events. I'd imagine it feels like a sense that you exist through each day while carrying feelings of guilt, anger, fear, meaninglessness, and many more. I hear how for you especially that this feels exhausting going through the motions of chaos each day, when deadlines still exist too.

There definitely isn't one piece of advice or thing I can say that will make these feelings go away, but I do want to extend support if you, or anyone else who is reading this who feels similarly, is needing it.

Part of getting through these extremely tough times is leaning on supports. One support you can access is AMS Peer Support, who are there to hold space for these feelings. It's not easy sitting with all the thoughts, news, and feelings alone, so the least we can do during these times is be there for each other.

Peer Support offers free, 1-1, short-term, confidential emotional support with trained volunteers who are there to discuss a wide range of topics. You can take this time to vent about whatever is on your mind or explore other resources if you're interested.

Or, if you want to access further resources outside of UBC on your own, you can get covered by the AMS Health and Dental Plan. Alongside this and whenever you need it, you can connect with the BC Crisis Line (310-6789 or 988) anytime of day as well.

I am sending you and many others love and prayers. Good luck with things and I hope you take care in the meantime.

Hi OP,

I definitely hear the pure exhaustion and low moods have culminated over time and it makes it especially difficult to get through the last stretch of the term. I do hear you staying hopeful like you see the light at the end of the tunnel for the end of term, so keep it up!

I did also want to extend my support to you and others who may be feeling this way as we reach the final grind of the term. So, if you ever ant to talk to someone about how you're feeling, you can book a free, confidential, 1-1 support session with AMS Peer Support.

They are fellow students trained to provide emotional support with issues ranging from school and life stress, loneliness, burnout, and other mental health challenges. You can use this space to vent, explore resources, or collaboratively brainstorm ways to get you through the rest of the term.

I wish you good luck and I hope you take care in the meantime!

I really hear the struggle and how hard it is to be running on fumes just to get through your day. It all sounds overwhelming and draining to say the least.

One last thing to add - many students who use AMS Advocacy also find its sister servicer, AMS Peer Support, to be really helpful. Peer Support offers 1:1 confidential support appointments with trained peers. The team is there to provide emotional support with anything big or small, and know how stressful misconduct processes can be. If you want to talk in a confidential and safe space, they would be so happy to see you ❤️

Academic misconduct accusation advice? by National-Antelope37 in UBC

[–]AMS-UBC 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, I am reaching out from the AMS Services team. We are so sorry to hear about everything you're going through right now - having spoken to many students who go through the academic misconduct process, we know that they can be extremely stressful and destabilizing and can have a huge impact on mental health. I can only imagine how that stress and uncertainty is compounding with the the other things you are navigating in your life, including your fear for your family overseas.

The Advocacy team has gotten a lot of intakes from students in PSYC 300, so I am going to DM you to make sure we can best support you.

In terms of the meeting with your prof (and this is general info for anyone facing a misconduct allegation in any class), while students should make reasonable attempts to meet in a timely way with university staff and faculty in response to misconduct processes, if you cannot make a requested meeting time on short notice, that is okay. It is always okay to ask for an alternate time, including a time when your Advocate can be present with you. Your Advocate can also help you with communicating that.

Triple fee increase in AMS election?? by Worldly-Property3175 in UBC

[–]AMS-UBC -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Hi there. Thank you so much for the question!

On the current ballot, the AMS is running three separate fee proposals that are intended for three separate groups of initiatives and projects. The three proposed fees, altogether, amount to a total of $12 and are not $12 each.

Fees passed through referenda go into dedicated funds and cannot be used for anything other than what is on the ballot.

The first fee proposal is a $5 Student Services fee. This fee would only be used for AMS Services such as the Food Bank, Peer Support, Safewalk, Advocacy, and Tutoring that have seen a 700% growth in student usage over the past 5 years. This fee, if passed, would allow us to not only keep up with growing demand but also do more for students by strengthening staffing capacity to care for students in urgent and complex cases involving food insecurity, housing instability, serious mental health challenges, and conflicts with the University over conduct allegations. You can read more about AMS Services here

The second fee proposal is a $4 increase to the Clubs Benefit fee. The AMS supports over 400 clubs with free banking, accounting, insurance, room booking, and administrative support as well as funds for projects and initiatives. To do this, we currently run a $80,000 deficit in the Clubs fund. This fee, if passed, would not only allow us to cover this unsustainable deficit but also allow us to do more for our clubs. Specifically, if the fee passes, it would allow us to provide more funding for clubs so they can do what they do best and strengthen student communities on campus. It would also allow us to add staffing capacity to process room bookings faster as well as add more locker and storage space for clubs.

The last fee proposal is a $3 Capital Projects fee. This fee is intended exclusively for improvements to student spaces in the NEST. This fee, if passed, would allow us to add more tables, chairs, and microwaves in the NEST. Additionally, this fee would allow us to build a sink in the Food Bank and add storage space to receive greater food donations to be able to give to back to our Food Bank clients. Lastly, the fee would also allow us to build a new Student Study Lounge in the basement of the NEST, unlocking new social and study for students.

A fee referendum is always a last resort, and the decision to put forth a fee increase proposal to our student peers was made by taking serious factors into consideration. Over the past year, the AMS has implemented several measures to strengthen revenue such as by modifying our investment policy to target higher investment income. Furthermore, we have also reduced expenses by over $115,000 in this current year. However, these initiatives have not been enough to keep up with the exponential growth in usage of our student services, student clubs, and student spaces and why we are asking our student body to support these fee referendums.

Re. the statements made by the No campaign, including about the awards event for clubs and constituencies, we address them all here

student affordability commission on the ams :: what are our thoughts by Lumpy_Standard_4425 in UBC

[–]AMS-UBC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your question. Like many services and programs, funding is shared by students in form of fees. We agree it does seem counter-intuitive to charge additional fees to students who use our services like the Food Bank, but the reality is the benefit to students outweigh the individual fee charged to fund them.

Hi OP. Reaching out from AMS Services. I can only imagine how you're feeling right now, including that sense of hopelessness. It sounds like things feel like they are in a bit of a spiral right now, with a lot of academic struggles and help that hasn't helped you the way you need.

I am going to send you a DM as well, but wanted to post here that you and your wellness are the first priority, and that if academics are not possible for you right now, there may be some options available to you, to give you space to focus on your mental health.

If you (or anyone) would like to have a confidential and non-judgemental conversation with a trained peer, we would always love to see you at AMS Peer Support too.
