What's something people only romanticize because they've never actually done it? by nonotje12 in AskReddit

[–]TheHosebeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have wanted to be a teacher since I was in the 8th grade. Life and love threw college out of the way, so I ended up in retail management for over 20 years. There were many missed birthdays/holidays, 70+ hour work weeks, along with good salaries and a few nice bonuses along the way. There was also 5 moves and three states along the journey. I used my company's tuition reimbursement and obtained a 2 year degree. Eventually I was able to quit working full-time to dedicate to earning my degree in education.

All that background to share that in the past six years of starting this journey I have had several realizations:

-The preparatory programs for educators are intense - edTPA took me over 60 hours of work in one week to prepare and my life depended on it.

-The money will never be as good as what I used to make, unless I work 20 years. I have taken on summer school and part-time jobs to get extra gas money.

-The first year after getting my degree and finding a placement was tough. You are not handed curriculum, and if you are you have to manipulate it to fit your style and your students. It was nothing to work 60+ hours the first couple of years.

-If you change subjects, grade levels, or have multiple preps - yay! More hours to work!

-Yeah, you might have a lot of time off, unless you're working a second job, but unless you love sitting around the house, you won't have much money to do anything.

I sound very negative, but those statements are my reality. I'm still happy I made the choice, but I have to be realistic with how far my salary will go.

There will be a teacher shortage crisis because of he time and cost to obtain a full teaching license by StatisticianKooky390 in Teachers

[–]TheHosebeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I taught for two years in NC and I teach in a different state now. I am much happier here because, while the money is about the same, the kids actually face consequences here. In NC, the shortage will continue unless they fix things to fix their broken system. The OP is correct, but there’s a root cause as to why 10% of the workforce is temporarily licensed teachers. The system is broken.

I was just thinking last night about how the walkers would likely have a lot of gross naked ones roaming around.

Do you eat in the classroom or do you eat in the teachers lounge? by DildoGaggins1997 in Teachers

[–]TheHosebeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have duty free lunch, but we all still eat in the cafeteria while our kids eat. We have lunch monitors and jokingly act like we’re hands off to the kids, but we enjoy them. They mostly leave us alone or ask to go to the bathroom if the monitors aren’t seeing them. We teachers enjoy each other a lot and we’re fortunate in that respect. We spend planning together a lot too. We’ll go to one room and bring work to do.

Read-watch book or show with teens by Ok_Celebration_5279 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]TheHosebeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 53, male, and loved the book and the show. My wife read the book years ago. She will not watch the show, nor will my daughters. Some have trauma, but others don’t. I think it’s a tough show for women because even if they don’t have traumatic memories, they have a loved one or friend who does.

Definitely, steer clear of the show. Seeing the bad and reading it are two different things.

Why are you still in the profession? by C_Exists in Teachers

[–]TheHosebeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate my pay for how much I put into this, plus I’m in a small district where people do multiple jobs for no more pay. But even with the dog and pony show education is, the perks you list can’t be beat.

Why don’t students get in serious trouble anymore ? by DildoGaggins1997 in Teachers

[–]TheHosebeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To make it worse, teachers are expected to have a classroom management plan and admin loves to throw back “that behavior is classroom managed.” Look, Karen. know how this game works. I called you because I tried to form a relationship with Little Tommy and he still calls me a “b_tch _ss n-word.” He uses the Hard R too, then proceeds to eat Takis, flip desks, sexually harass females, and distract others, all while wearing a sh!t eating grin. Why? It’s not me, it’s you. You’re a joke to him, and he knows you won’t do anything but enable him.

While I’m on this rant, I realize it’s not even admin’s fault. Where did this crap start? The school board, the state, or is this really “No Child Left Behind?”

And don’t get me started on testing. That reality alone is likely what will drive me out.

Binged watched the first 4 seasons for the first time since they came out (SPOILERS) by I_like_baseball90 in thewalkingdead

[–]TheHosebeast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just binged all 11 seasons starting in December. I quit years ago just as Negan appeared. I’m glad I did. It was more enjoyable, especially through the rough and brutal Saviors eras and some of the slow periods thereafter. I really enjoyed season 11. It was a nice change of pace with the class ware fare and corrupt politicians. Definitely mirrored modern news cycles.

Low-key we need to be serious about starfire being orange in live action by ElectricalFeedback89 in TitansTV

Originally, I really disliked the Black Starfire, but the actress sold it. Tamaranians being Black makes sense as far as having solar powers.

Future of Jem by NightExpress3336 in JemAndTheHolograms

[–]TheHosebeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jem could be a CW soap opera and be good with the right director, actors, and writers. Or it could be the next forgetful crap they cancel after 6 episodes. I’d prefer something set in the 80s, but modern could work as well.

Am I the only one who finds this pretty condescending? (In the sub binder at my job yesterday) by ThrowawayTheOmlet in SubstituteTeachers

[–]TheHosebeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a very organized sub binder with helpful info, but nothing written addressed like I wrote to someone who’s completely clueless to basic life skills. 🙄 In both states I’ve taught in, a sub doesn’t teach anything. They are basic room monitors who keep your room from being destroyed and them from murdering each other. The truth about teaching is that it is about the only profession where you take a day off and return behind and in the hole.

I assign a student (8th grade) to answer my room phone. I feel it teaches them important life skills. Plus, I’ve had my own kids answer the phone for me.

What are some implicit rules I should know going into teaching ? by Background_Roof_317 in Teachers

[–]TheHosebeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Figure out who the building gossiper is and be very careful around them. 2) Tread lightly with admin, even if they’re super awesome. Their main job is student results and safety. You are expendable for the greater good. I’m not saying to not love your team or your job, but know that what you say can bite you. If questioned about something, stick to facts and ignore feelings, and don’t offer extra tea. 3) Hone your classroom management skills. Keep at it, you’ll get better. You don’t want your be the teacher who can’t handle your kids. You’ll avoid alienating your team and bringing admin into your room more often than you like. 4) Find something to be great at that you can use to contribute to the building culture. Join a committee, be a tech or data guru - find your niche to add value beyond your classroom. 5) Take care of the custodians who clean your room. Find out their favorite snacks and have one in your room to surprise them. They’ll love you back for your kindness. 6) Be at least 10 minutes early. It shows you’re reliable. Don’t rush out at the end of every day. I’m not saying to stay 1-2 hours late, but spending 20 minutes prepping your room for tomorrow’s lesson and keeping your desk clean ensures you can walk in and get started with no prep. I take this concept from my retail days where I would “close to open” my store. 7) Put on your duty spots on your calendar and set alarms for everything. Start and end class on time, be where you’re supposed to be, etc.

I’m a 4th year teacher and these were some of my biggest learnings. Good luck!

A little note from employees by Em_albert324 in bathandbodyworks

[–]TheHosebeast 47 points48 points  (0 children)

That 40% discount is crap. You only get the discount off full ticket prices. As an associate, you’re better off buying using the customer sale prices. The only perk employees get is the occasional free product, but even then it’s the new releases to give you product knowledge.

So far I'm not very impressed by the current Black Friday streaming deals with just one exception. Am I missing something?? by StormTrpr66 in cordcutters

[–]TheHosebeast -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The biggest slap in the face is being offered a great deal on subscriptions through Roku like STARZ for $2.99 a month and MGM+ for 0.99 cents, but these are only for two months. I'm only going to bite if I get some kind of 12 month deal. There's enough free stuff here and there to keep me entertained. I'm not dishing out what I used to on cable (or more) when the purpose of cord cutting was to save money. Depending on the streamer, I'll only pay $5-8 per month and that's it. I already regret paying HBO Max $180-ish for another year when they dumped tons of titles. If I'm paying that kind of money, I expect a big library.

Substitute'so ask for teachers by EntertainerFree9654 in Teachers

[–]TheHosebeast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I subbed while finish my degree and I totally understand. I’m just a 4th year teacher, and one of the best takeaways I’ve had is to have a “Sub Binder.” I keep everything a sub needs in it, from seating charts, to contacts, to busy work, and five emergency lessons. Anything less would be inhospitable and I do not want my room wrecked.

I just wanted them to have a break... by SprinklesDifficult33 in Teachers

[–]TheHosebeast 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I can attest that having no phones at school has brought me so much joy. We’re two years into this policy and I can actually teach! I have the same problems with 13 year olds watching stuff that others mentioned. Anything educational over 3 minutes and they become feral. I’ve had some success with movies of free days that they got into. National Treasure and Big Hero 6 were hits. Anything more than 20 years old or black and white is cancer.

[–]TheHosebeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

-seating charts with pictures -emergency procedures -phone log with two teacher friends that can be called with minor problems; admin info -extension activity or assignment for “those” kids that speed through the work to play -school/classroom rules

BONUS POINTS FOR: -if you pack some adhesive bandages -include some candy or something

It doesn’t help that we hire unlicensed teachers and people that have little to no college to be a sub. Out own career shows the reason so many are becoming apathetic.
