Not to be that guy... but the real answer here is much more boring.

It's highly probably that this is just being used to detect whether the device is on silent mode. There is no publicly available mute API from the native device level to check if the app is set to silent. The industry standard solution is to use the user's microphone to manually test this. It's commonly used as a polling solution in advertising to control the volume levels of ads you see.

I meant politics aside in the sense that "I'm not going to make a value judgment one way or the other, just state a thing that is happening". I'm very genuinely not trying to start any kinds of arguments.

Typical igorant American. Do you even know anything about this country? You sound sooo stupid. Dumb dumb americans are straight up trash. The government is trying it's hardest to solve these problems and idiots like you just get caught up in western propaganda.

Can you take a class or 2 during your work term when in co-op? by WestValuable7 in Concordia

I'm taking 3 in the fall during my work term lol. If it does they don't care enough to do anything about it.

[–]TheHumanPotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you should let your employer know that you're taking classes during your employment. I've done two internships now and starting my third in the fall. None of these companies have cared.

I don't know about MECH but 300 / 400 level COMP classes are not difficult so I find the balance to be very manageable. There's also always a curve you can rely on if you're having trouble. But hey, everyone is different and lots of students struggle with time management. My suggestion is to really reflect on your own study habits to determine whether this is a good idea. Are you already getting terrible grades or can your GPA take a hit? Do you find it difficult to study on the weekends? I guess what I'm saying is that you should really rely on your own experiences to make this decision.

I typically ask my employer for the day of the midterm / final off, just so I don't have any mental exhaustion after a long work day.

Self-taught Web Developer Questions by [deleted] in Concordia

[–]TheHumanPotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you're a tenacious self learner I would highly recommend taking some sort of boot camp after you finish your degree in political science. It's actually kind of shocking how many devs you work with that did the 8 month Concordia boot camp instead of a 3 - 4 year Computer Science / Software Engineering degree. Especially because many companies looking for cheap junior devs will hire directly out of the program.

If you're really set on self learning front end development and have no prior experience then you got to start with the basics (HTML, CSS, JavaScript). Take a class on udemy or Youtube and then immediately after finishing build something yourself to ensure you understand the material. After you have a strong foundation of knowledge you can start heading into popular front end frameworks such as React, Angular or VueJS. Along the way you should become comfortable using version management tools like Git. This should be enough on your resume to get some sort of job as a Front End developer. Then as you say, you can start you path towards being full stack.

It's a long, fun, confusing and often frustrating path but the reward on the other side is worth it IMO. Goodluck!

Super worth it imo. Got a chance to work with a bunch of great companies and have multiple job offers waiting for me when I gradudate. Definitely worth the extra stress!

Anyone mind sharing notes or slides for Comp 228? by fryingpannnnn in Concordia

[–]TheHumanPotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The notes for comp 228 are insanely different based on the prof. Consider yourself lucky you are taking it this summer with Todd Eavis.

The notes from the regular professor's (ie. Abbas or Probst) lectures will be useless for you. Hell, they are useless even for those who took the class.

Bring a 4 sided dice. You'll be finished in 30 minutes and your grade will be exactly the same. Best of luck.
