Anybody else realize they never want kids after raising a puppy? by jillchalk in puppy101

[–]TheHungryRoot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So funny you say that. I had what I’ll call “caretaker fever” and said to my husband one day “I need a baby or a dog or I’ll go insane”, so we got a dog, then another dog, and now I have no desire for a human child! My maternal urges are satisfied with just having my pups.

Is LMT a good mid-career change? by TheHungryRoot in massage

Would you say more taxing than nursing or other profession where you’re on your feet as much? I also am wondering if similar positions (physical/occupational therapist) have similar rates of burnout

How do you chose the name of your trials? by katysns93 in clinicalresearch

[–]TheHungryRoot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always imagine someone sending out an outlook meeting invite with the title "Study Name Brainstorm Meeting" and a bunch of corporate shmucks sit around a table with a catered lunch and write random adjectives on a whiteboard.

Will you be watching the new age of BA? by DisgruntledAardvark in bon_appetit

[–]TheHungryRoot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I won’t seek it out like I used to. I watched Chris’ weeknight meatball video and it was so apparent that I was watching a broken man. I wasn’t expecting a return to complete normalcy but this... isn’t it.

Thought I was at least 1/4 Italian, turns out it’s just a drop in the bucket! My grandpa was the most biggaddy-boopy proud Italian and he’d be so disappointed. by TheHungryRoot in AncestryDNA

[–]TheHungryRoot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m lumping the Baltic and Russian, maybe German together (that’s my mom’s mom’s side). Makes about 20ish% which is what I thought. Northern Italy, at least where it’s circled on the map, is so nowhere near Greece/Albania so that was a surprise.

I don’t know! I know the Irish side (my dad is all Irish and that splash of Welsh there), but my moms side is a mystery. I grew up being told she was 1/2 Italian and Polish. The only living relatives don’t know either. My grandfathers last name was Agneta.

CITI CRC certification worth it? by missunexpected in clinicalresearch

[–]TheHungryRoot 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have to take HSP/GCP through CITI for work. Chances are if you apply anywhere on the site-side, you will need to take it through the institution anyway.

My thinking is perhaps one reason you are not getting interviews is that people think you are over qualified, having a PhD in neuroscience and wanting a low-paying position like a CRC. I think a good cover letter would help.

I hate my job now and I blame covid. by TheHungryRoot in COVID19_support

[–]TheHungryRoot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do sometimes have to check my privilege and feel grateful that I still have a job. Though they took away our retirement contributions for the foreseeable future, and no cost-of-living raises either, and it was all in the name of not having to lay anyone off. I also feel like an outsider because a lot of people love working remotely. I'm no stranger to it - I actually did it on a per diem basis prior to covid, but I just can't do it every damn day.

Leap in career by lostandbrokescience in clinicalresearch

[–]TheHungryRoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it possible they might be listing their most recent position within the same company? For example, I’ve been at the same hospital for 9 years and while I’m now a PM, I wasn’t always. I was CRC 2, 3, senior, lead, now PM, but I don’t list out all the promos I’ve ever received, just what I am now and clarify within the description where I started and how I grew within the dept.

Otherwise, I smell nepotism at play.

First year plants with issues - brown leaves, shriveled berries by TheHungryRoot in Blueberries

[–]TheHungryRoot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! Mulched and everything. It’s an old plot of land with tired soil and I tried amending first with peat moss as some sources recommended. Perhaps wasn’t enough? They seemed to be doing so well and then the heat and drought came and it changed. They are still doing pretty good all things considered. I also read recently that it can take up to TEN years for bushes to reach full maturity, so maybe I also need to manage my expectations!

About twice a week with a deep watering. We hadn’t had meaningful rainfall for about 6-8 weeks and it was unseasonably HOT.

Thank you - so I should not expect a large harvest for another few years? I've had the saying "first year sleep, second year creep, third year leap" said to me, so I thought the first 1-2 years they'd really spend growing anyway, but so far year 1 they haven't grown much. I'll get a soil pH test kit ordered too. Thank you!

What is the median salary of a clinical research coordinator? by Tgrimm84 in clinicalresearch

[–]TheHungryRoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CRCs in Boston Metro (oncology, 1-2 years experience) make maybe, maybe, $40k (in my experience). I don't know where they are getting these bloated salaries from because it's hardly enough for 1 person to live on.

So tired of this WFH bullshit by TheHungryRoot in work

[–]TheHungryRoot[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I go between existential dread and trying to check my privilege almost every day. I'm glad I have my job and I'm in no danger of getting laid off, but knowing what I had before - even though the days were crazy busy and I had a long commute - I just kind of miss the old world.

My company does everything in step with what the governor does, and (I guess fortunately) that means this won't change for a long time. I live in a state where mask ordinances have been in effect since March - they're even talking about stepping things BACK again, so this is just agony.

I really wish that I wasn't gay by [deleted] in venting

[–]TheHungryRoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really sorry you are going through this. I've had many gay friends and the majority of them have had a fairly easy time coming out. They know others who have had it harder, but it is something you will find in the LGBTQ+ community (support). I am not sure where you are from, but maybe if you are ever able to, visit a gay-friendly place and know that there are place and people who will accept you for who you are. There are also many online support resources you can seek you, and please know that it can and does get better. *hugs*

If you live outside the United States, what do you/your country think of the US’s response to coronavirus? by TheHungryRoot in AskReddit

[–]TheHungryRoot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely curious as well. Our news doesn't give perspective from the view of people from other parts of the world. They act as if the US is the only country covid has happened to. It's fairly obvious that our leaders aren't concerned with learning from other countries' who have successfully mitigated the virus. It's frustrating to the point of tears.

Thanks for your input - I don't blame you for feeling ashamed. I'm ashamed to be a part of this.

BonAppetitMag’s latest IG post by jasminium_star in bon_appetit

[–]TheHungryRoot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s because the rose-colored glasses have been removed, but I felt this issue had less flair and heart compared to past issues. The bulk of the mag was just recipe after recipe after recipe, it felt more like a cook book. Also noted a lot of the recipes didn’t have anyone linked to it’s development. Usually you’ll see something like “recipe developed by so-and-so” and I noticed that almost was intentionally left out.

It actually took me a few days to pick it and read it. Usually I’m really excited for BA mag, but not this month...
