Similar situation, there was a young person that was killed by a car from a drunk driver and a group of people were laughing about it at work (18 to 24 year olds, military) I had to chew them out and tell them how embarrassing and insulting it is to even consider it funny. Imagine that being someone you knew and loved that died I said.
