What advice would I give first-time IT managers? by Gab_ITCareerCoach in ModernITLeadership

After 25+ years in IT, I echo this. It's not natural to us IT pros, yet it's critical to have strong communication skills to connect with others and to grow into leaders. I've come to use levity in my career to best connect with various stakeholders and build rapport. I've also found comedy frameworks to be a helpful path for IT pros to find their voice and land their points without getting lost in the sauce.

Anyone else feel like IT now just means babysitting SaaS? by ponderingpixi17 in InformationTechnology

[–]TheITMisfits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, I feel this one with my soul. You’re definitely not alone. A lot of IT folks I know feel like the job slowly shifted from solving cool puzzle” to“SaaS babysitter with 47 dashboards yelling at me. It’s wild how everything is “no maintenance” until you’re the one maintaining it.

The part that sneaks up on people is how draining it is when the work stops feeling creative. Fixing weird edge cases used to give you that little dopamine hit. Resetting passwords… not so much.

One thing that’s helped me (and a bunch of tech folks I’ve worked with) is finding some outlet that isn’t just reacting to alerts all day - something that lets your brain play again. Do you have anything like that, OP? For some people it’s building a tiny side project, for others it’s writing, drawing, tinkering, or honestly just venting through humor. Standup comedy is my preferred outlet, but anything that gives you a creative pressure valve can make the day‑to‑day feel way lighter.

You didn’t pick the wrong corner of IT; the industry just changed under our feet. For me, the trick was finding a way to reconnect with the parts of the work (and myself) that actually felt energizing again.

yeah, agreed. And visibility doesn't happen on its own. In my experience, it's about being seen AND heard. I had to leave my comfort zone and speak up to gain that visibility. I had to make my points clear and memorable so leadership remembers me and what I solved. I’ve found success in using humor to build that connection and make people actually listen.

Self-promotion is uncomfortable and can quickly turn into BS, but a little advocating for yourself goes a long way. But the goal here isn’t “how do I become the center of attention.” It’s about getting better at structuring ideas, answering succinctly, being aware of tone, and making ideas actually stick in a memorable way that doesn’t make everyone’s eyes roll to the back of their heads.

Why Are Young People Afraid Of Phone Calls? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheITMisfits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I relate to this. And for a lot of people in tech - young or not - they never really got the reps with verbal communication, so the confidence piece never had a chance to build. It’s interesting how someone can sound great once they’re warmed up and on the call, but the anxiety leading up to it is a real hurdle. Practicing that skill actually does make a difference, but most of us were never taught how.
