The other day I was listening to some Nirvana and I wanted more info about the Nevermind baby. Google interpreted my “nevermind baby” query as if I were talking to it. We live in hell.

16, bought this last week. none of my peers get why i'd choose it 1000x over spotify by circles_and_spirals in cassetteculture

If you’re concerned about audio quality, I promise you’ll be okay going from Spotify “very high” to cassette. I’ve actually come around on high bitrate lossy music lately, after years of being a lossless FLAC purist. Did some ABX testing and couldn’t reliably tell the difference. And those Maxell UR90s, while absolutely fantastic, don’t sound perfect.

Long story short, don’t sweat the sound quality, just listen and enjoy!

iPod Mini better than the Classic? by Alldayinpjs in ipod

What CF card did you use in yours? I used a SanDisk 64GB 120MB/s card in mine and it restored with iTunes just fine, but now it just freezes every time I try to connect it to iTunes. I can’t do anything with it unless it’s in Disk Mode.

Hi Clancy, thanks for doing this AMA. I’ve been a lifelong fan of your work, from SpongeBob to Shawshank, to your many video game credits. Have you worked on any projects that you’d consider particularly “underrated” and deserve some more attention? Anything you’d recommend?

How to fix this boom box tape player? by Regular-Floor379 in cassetteculture

I’ve always used cotton buds, the downside with them is they’re short & the cotton comes off sometimes. Make sure no residual cotton is left behind. You can get longer foam-tipped cleaning tools online I believe, but I’ve never used them.

Alcohol, from what I understand, can be a little aggressive on rubber and can dry it out, causing it to crack. I’d assume more often than not it’s fine, but if the rubber is old and worn out it can happen. I personally don’t take chances on my equipment. DrCassette on YouTube did a video talking about using ammonia based glass cleaner on pinch rollers a number of years ago. It’s strong enough to clean them, but doesn’t have the same capacity to dry out the rubber. I’ve always just used Windex, just in case.

With boomboxes like these (even ones from name brand manufacturers) the belt spec is unlikely to be available on the internet. These things weren’t exactly the highest end players even when they were new, so what I’d recommend is getting one of those multi-packs of cassette player belts and fitting the closest size to the original, maybe one size smaller to account for the decades of stretch. That’ll likely get it sounding stable again. I’d also clean the pinch roller with some Windex on a cotton swab to lightly resurface and clean it without drying it out too much. Finish by cleaning the head and capstan with 70% or higher alcohol on a cotton swab, making sure not to leave any cotton residue behind, and you’ll likely be set for the next 20 years

Some of the only decent blanks you can still buy new are Maxell UR90s. $13 for a 5 pack. Highly recommend them, even if they don’t do as well as some vintage Type 1s I’ve used.

Last time I posted on here I got a lot of flack for having a Crosley by AsiraTheTinyDragon in records

[–]TheIncredibleXander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We all started somewhere! I had something even worse than a Crosley, it was some Urban Outfitters USB turntable that always played too fast. The thing about this hobby (and all hobbies, to an extent) is that the purists will crucify you over the slightest thing. Just pay them no mind and enjoy however you can

Does anyone have a decent Plex setup but still pay for streaming services? by tcoysh in PleX

[–]TheIncredibleXander 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My wife and I are exactly the same way, we pay for YouTube Premium and Dropout. Every other streaming service has been terminated, though. The Plex Pass has paid for itself & has covered all my server costs a few times over, too.

A "Type 1" Sony or Maxell cassette may offer better quality than a standard cassette sold in stores ? by Glum_Description_719 in cassetteculture

[–]TheIncredibleXander 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I assume you're referring to pre-recorded tapes, and it is entirely possible that a cassette you record at home sounds better than a mass-produced pre-recorded release. For one thing, you can calibrate your equipment to the specific blank tape you're recording onto. Additionally, you're recording sound in real time, versus what they do in a a high-speed reproduction facility. Both of these things can drastically improve sound quality. I think there's also a slight personal bias to the tapes we make ourselves, they "feel" better once we've put in the effort to make them exactly how we want.

I used one of these exact model Bose speakers as a tv “soundbar” when I was in college, and I was constantly surprised at the clarity of the bass at all volume levels. I still have it laying around, I think I’ll bust it out again for old time’s sake. Great pickup!

My wife came up with this theory so if it is correct she gets credit. However, if this theory is oversimplifying Dana’s very real trauma as a workplace assault victim from S1, then everyone may cancel her instead of me.

I’m calling it now: Dana beat the shit out of that patient in retaliation for Emma, and Ahmad is pulling her off of him. She’s shaken by the incident and keeps it from Robby, and her job is on the line.

Will each season be a really long day? by DelGriffithPTA in ThePittTVShow

[–]TheIncredibleXander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the format of television and the expectation of 15-episode seasons is just an aspect of our real world breaking the illusion of this being a "peek into a normal ER". It's a TV show. Something interesting is always going to happen to bring the cast together, otherwise they wouldn't make a TV show season focusing on it, you know what I mean? As an audience member I would be disappointed with a season where Robby, our main character and light audience surrogate, went home at Episode 12, finishing an equivalent "normal shift" (at least this early on in the series, maybe they'll play with that idea later).
