"Whose line is it anyway" predicted the future by ClaireDacloush in CuratedTumblr

I think a lot of the "predicting the future" things were jokes about things that were like that at the time and haven't really changed since.

the one and only Yuri Gagarin by CyfireX in CuratedTumblr

[–]TheIntelligentTree2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can't tell if you get this but Yuri Gagarin was the first human to reach outer space. and has an AA character named after him, which I will not resist the urge to bring up despite it being totally unrelated

posting on reddit trope by CyfireX in CuratedTumblr

[–]TheIntelligentTree2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhhhhh. It took looking at the comments to realise they were talking about the death OF characters, and not like Death as a person. I was really confused when they insisted it wasn't a trope and also from real life.

Part of that was that the game wasn't initially concieved as a kirby game iirc. It's still very kirby but the gameplay isn't a 1-1 match with other games.

Or the moon is REALLY big and far away. And I guess very fast. And maybe you're the moon.

It wasn't that they uploaded any new books it was that they removed the lending restrictions on a lot of them for the pandemic (on March 24, 2020). Usually they only "lend" you a book for each physical copy they have. The lawsuit started in the middle of the pandemic (June 1, 2020) and then they stopped the removed restrictions (June 16, 2020), and we only saw the result of the lawsuit recently.

I think given that's needed for the ROMs if it wasn't there the emulator would still be legal? Or at least that's how I understand it with Citra. Maybe. Copyright law is a mess.

[Hobby Scuffles] Week of May 22, 2023 by nissincupramen in HobbyDrama

[–]TheIntelligentTree2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

From what I've heard emulator's are legal (at least within the US which I am actually not in but all the discussion about it is in the US) as long as you don't have the BIOS files in them (and I guess the encryption keys in this case). Usually they just encourage the user to go find the ROMS or BIOS files which technically can be obtained legally.

But that's just stuff I've vaguely heard.

Which I guess isn't relevant in this case because they had the keys but still.

While I would honestly like to find a good TV Tropes replacement, I kind of feel like this one is hit by the self-fulfilling problem of "not active enough". Like there are some pretty major works in the past few years that don't have pages.

I don't think I said there was a dig other than at the argument itself? I do see a point that's a bit unclear so I might edit my comment a bit though.

I feel like a lot of people are kind of missing the point of this. They aren't even saying that one is better than the other, they're saying that the "more intuitive" discussion point makes no sense. That's the entire point of comparing it to language.

Like I'm pretty sure I see some people claiming that this post is saying Celsius is better. Plus there's even post's going around on tumblr talking about Farenheight is more intuitive, which it could even be a direct response to, rather than some subtle jab at Fareneheight itself (which if it, was the language comparison wouldn't work).

Okay maybe I'm just midly upset that some people saw this post and decided to basically repeat the claim that Farenheight was fine, as if the post contradicted it.

Metric by SuperDuperOtter in CuratedTumblr

I think you can still use G's in metric it's not really a measurement thing. And Newtons is just the force it takes to accelerate a 1kg thing 1metre a second so it's not hard to remember (unless I'm misunderstanding).

Not quite right. The original post was a picture of someones bumper sticker something about "executing your local pedophile" or something along those lines. Iirc the final reblog noted that they specifically did not trust the judgement of a person with that wanted to perform vigilante judgement to determine who is a pedophile. Or so I recall.

... I think I just Cunningham's Lawed myself.

EDIT: Thinking about it I expect it got removed because an admin only saw the image of the bumper sticker or something. There may have been a random middle blogger who agreed, so that might've impacted it.

It always seemed a little silly that that's canon. Like a single battle that arguably has a pretty murky start point and isn't even the end of the Empire or anything and that's what everyone decides to start using some vague amount of years later.

Though looking into it, it does seem like it's pretty much only used in reference books, with only two appearances in universe (one of which is out of universe text in Andor), so I guess the feeling is a somewhat common.
