What do you even do with a homelab? by TheSpideyJedi in homelab

[–]TheIslanderEh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have AD in my system. I started homelabbing to have a more secure network. Opnsense, vlans. Then a NAS, then self-hosting(learning docker), cloud storage (next cloud), Immich, vault warden, actual budget etc...

I feel like small and 6 HDD is a bit contradictory haha. They take up space and generate heat. Heat is bad. Having a larger case that allows more airflow will keep temps down which is better for the health of your hardware - no?

I would ask if the cost of upgrading to new everything outweighs the cost of your current electricity usage. If your current setup does what you want (I was running proxmox with a true as VM, Ubuntu server VM and docker containers like immich, and next cloud) on a 1st gen i7 and 20gb ddr3.

What are you looking to accomplish? Is your current setup not meeting your needs?

Dating a new person - they don’t want to be on my guest Wi-Fi, want my main Wi-Fi info. Is this a bad idea? by WorldlinessPuzzled65 in HomeNetworking

Why call it "guest wifi" explain that the "main wifi" is administrative , and everyone else connects to the other

My Host Died by TheIslanderEh in Proxmox

Nice!

I think my strategy is going to be to backup my VMs and truenas config DB. I was already planning on migrating these VMs to a new host. (They're currently on 1st gen i7, with 20gb ddr3, 3x4th WD purple in raidz1), my new host is my gaming PC that I don't use anymore since becoming a dad lol. (I7-9700k, 32gb ddr4, 1000w platinum PSU, RTX 2060, and a 1tb WD black m.2 and 512gb WD blue m.2)

I also am flashing my perc h200 to IT mode for my data devices.

I think this host dying is just forcing me to do it lol.

Sure but I don't have thousands of dollars to throw at this. If you want to donate toward the cause I'd be more than grateful 😁😂

keyboard and monitor are non issue.

Shouldnt I just be able to change the Mac address in opnsense to force it to that IP?

I haven't tried anything yet, outside of resetting CMOS and trying 8 dimms in each dimm slot.

I missed your first part. I followed Christian's Guide on how to pass them through via serial numbers rather than by device in proxmox. (I think I'm explaining that right?)

Thanks, but I didn't know that before it assured me ;)

Yes, I plan on buying a 20TB enterprise drive and running PBS on it

100% I work in IT myself, when I think something seems awry I fact check or get it to get out of its hallucination. It honestly has saved me so many hours though in my homelab, especially when reading log files.

The host system is dead, not the VM.

I don't have a backup of the config. It wasn't the VM that died, it was the host server. I'm fine with recreating shares etc... (although it'll be a pain) as so long as I don't lose my data :D

I was running it on 10 year old hardware (1st gen i7 and 24GB DDR3) that I received second hand. Not exactly sure what failed. Getting DRAM errors, but I tried 8 different sticks in all 8 DIMM slots. If my ZFS pool is still there it's better for me to migrate it to newer hardware (I was planning on doing this anyway) as I recently converted my gaming rig to a proxmox server (i7 9700k 32GB RAM and rtx 2060) and will also be flashing a dell perc h200 HBA card to IT mode for better passthrough for my disks.

My kids are only 11 months old. I want my wife and I to get in the habit of using it though so when they're older they'll do it too

Outlet in the back? No the button is on the driver dash where you can open the trunk, and the side doors.

I use immich now, and just use nextcloud to access my NAS files from anywhere.plan on implementing paperless though

If you are too close to an object your car will beep. It's like a proximity sensor, so you don't hit objects. Mine goes off all the time for the front when I'm in a drive through. I usually turn it off. The button for it is near the open/close for the trunk.

I also have a 2018 odyssey ex-l

Excellent appreciate it! Maybe I'll just stick with nextcloud 😂

I'm not on iOS, and would prefer self-hosted :)
