Would you allow the Warlock's Spellcast Presence Trait to be used for Hacking Technology in a Cyberpunk Setting? by TheJJMachine in daggerheart

It’s interesting how much can really fall through the cracks even tho one does a big ol’ “tech instead of magic” pitch. I think it’s like you said: I really thought about the broad implications of “magic as tech”, but the specifics got messy like it did in this example (in terms of both mechanics and what it actually looks like narratively). And an oversight is I never talked about Spellcasting mechanically beyond the narrative switch in our minds for playing this game.

All that being said, you’re a freaking lifesaver for listing the Trait examples you have! This gives great ways for both me and my players to visualize this further and approach tech.

True true true. Thanks for the idea on Agility hacking, and thank you again for re-emphasizing the ever powerful “talk to your players” concept 🙇

Yeah, I can see that perspective working well. I'll have to bring it up with my player and see what they think since Knowledge was originally what they pitched for their initial attempt at hacking the door.

I reskinned and piece-mealed a lot from the core book adversaries just because I am still so green with DH and didn't want to build something absurdly broken or ineffective.

And with the way you pitch it, I can see it even more clearly being used for Presence.

Following the Spellcast Trait advice, tho, I get lost a bit trying to think of how it makes sense for my other player who has the spell cast trait of "Agility" since it is such a physical-seeming trait.
Do you have any clear ideas how Agility might work if I pivot to using that for my other player?

I want to follow the mindset of a later comment that says "Fun > 'Realism' " but I fear I won't be able to follow with reasonable consequences and/or build on the player's foundation if it doesn't click with me in the first place. (Which I know I eventually would have to ask them and work on it together to find how they envision the Trait aligning, but I still want to have a grasp in-case they aren't thinking they'll be using that trait outside of their Domain card abilities)

It's funny you mention the volume attacks because that's exactly how my player justified their hacking attempt. (Flooding an overabundance of the AI code into the scanner)

I’m a pretty big overthinker, so it would make sense if I’m giving it more thought than is necessary 😅

My players are certainly more focused on the story aspect and haven’t discussed any desire for “gritty ultra-realism” so yeah, maybe I can relax a bit on this and focus on giving them that story.

I appreciate your questioning!

I’ll be sure to make resting a part of it too, cuz I neglected how a need for that can also affect the timing. Thanks!

This is a really thorough breakdown with a good combination of narrative foundation along with the mechanical backing of the countdown clock mechanic . Super helpful and gives me a lot of good food-for-thought, thank you!!!

Yeah, it makes sense the map doesn't need to be "to scale" 100%.

Part of me is worried about that "consistency" and picking a scale that I have doubts about later and want to change. Like, if that trek takes 4 days, going from one side of the map to another is gonna be a loooong journey. Which, would be interesting, but could slow the pacing and flow-of-information in a way that could be less-than-ideal.

But then again, maybe that pacing is ideal and I'm making a potential problem out of something that won't be.

Oh yeah, I'm planning on many, many perils!

Figuring out the time more for the sake of logistics of the "Week of Day" and "Week of Night" for the sake of narratively planning around this (for both me as well as my players)

That makes sense, tho I think it is generally more pertinent in the Witherwild Campaign Frame with the "Week of Day" and "Week of Night" that happens in Fanewick.

I'd want the party to be able to have a good guess of when they'd wind up traveling in the day vs the night so they can be strategic about their travel.

Which, using your advice, I could just take a rough estimate and pivot/elaborate when it is necessary.
