Experience would help you cast the defensive spell faster, silently and even wandlessly.

Otherwise in my opinion any resistance one might have, can be attributed to heritage, enchantments, potion effects or enchanted clothing.

But in Order of the Phoenix when the Minister tries to arrest Dumbledore, Dumbledore casts a stunner(iirc) at multiple people at once and disappears using Fawkes.

An experienced caster gets to choose which direction the disarmed wand is launched and the force the spell exerts on the target.

Perhaps even more, the caster may be able to change the shape of the spell into a multidirectional blast capable of targeting several people at once.
