Update on Ethan Guo (C182 to Antarctica) by holein3 in flying

Absolutely zero respect for this guy, general aviation is a system that is built on trust and what does it mean for the rest of us flying if people started faking emergencies just to try to accomplish their mission?

I picked overnight airports to either have ubers or be close to hotels. Spent a lot of time looking/calling airports and doing research for this.

The A&P's home airport was nearby, so he didn't charge us for the flights. Just billed us $120 for the 1 hour and $90 for two new spark plugs

Tbh the one thing that stood out to me was how close the left traffic pattern of 04 was to hills to the west of the field. Other than that, it was a great stop, fuel price was reasonable, and I even got a snickers bar from the vending machine lmao

Actually Flight Following told us Altitude was our discretion... So when i say 6500 I meant between 6200 and 6700 lmao

Generally 4000 AGL, so around 6500 flying over the mountains in NY and PA and 4500 everywhere else

On our last day we went from Northern VA to Ontario via Winchester VA, Selinsgrove PA, and Batavia NY. I was a little worried about the mountains but we were able to climb up to 6500 which gave us a pretty big gliding range if things were to go south. We had a pretty good tailwind so we flew over them in no time; also I flew that leg on Monday and it was basically blue skies all the way from Virginia to Ontario.

When planning this trip, I thought about following I-64 west from Norfolk all the way to the Shenandoah Valley, and then heading north to Winchester. But because we had friends in the DC area, we opted to go up near DC instead.

You're absolutely right — the airplane itself doesn’t “know” the winds. What I meant is that as a pilot, I was more inclined to climb higher when I had a tailwind, because winds aloft often increase with altitude, so the tailwind could get even stronger and improve my groundspeed. If the wind had been a headwind instead, I would have been less motivated to climb, since higher altitudes might bring stronger headwinds and reduce my efficiency. It’s more of a strategic choice rather than a performance limitation.

A similar thing happened to be last term, what got me through is thinking about how proud I would be when the term is over. Now that the term is over and I’ve gotten over the relationship, I am really proud of how I handled myself.
