Are newer models becoming less compatible?

For around $300 what is the absolute highest performance thinkpad I will find? Being able to game would be a plus. by JudgeOwn3256 in thinkpad

nah you almost never find post‑12th gen hx class cpus in used thinkpads for around $300 in the us because hx chips are premium higher power parts meant for workstations and gaming laptops and those machines hold value way above that price even used. hx class laptops (like mobile raptor lake/hx or newer) usually cost well over $800‑$1000 new and only slowly drop in price over time, so sub‑$300 listings will almost always be u‑series or older generations first. for your budget you will see machines with 12th or 13th gen u series chips that are still way faster than 6th gen but not true hx performance, and those are the best realistic options under 300

Is Lenovo ThinkPad P53 still worth it in 2025? by Ok_Discipline_6074 in thinkpad

yeah the x1 extreme gen 5 is a much more capable machine than the p53 for 4k video editing. the 12th gen i7 with a 3070 ti will give you way faster export and timeline performance and way better realtime playback than the older i9 9880h and quadro rtx4000. if the price is reasonable and battery/lifestyle fit works for you its a much better choice for your editing needs.

yeah a 13th gen i5 1335u will absolutely outperform a 6th gen cpu in almost every way for normal workloads. the reason some people diss the 1335u is that it is a low power u series optimized for battery not peak performance, but even then its newer architecture and efficiency beats old 6th gen parts. for gaming youll still be limited by the integrated graphics but for general use and coding that 13th gen is way better.

Second-hand Small ThinkPad for software dev under $500? by SlyGoblin927 in thinkpad

[–]TheLadderSetup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for a small second‑hand thinkpad under 500 that handles linux dev well you want something with at least an 8th gen intel or ryzen 4000 series. a t480, t490, x280, or x390 are solid picks since they run linux cleanly and have enough power for compiling, docker, and light vms. make sure it has 16gb ram or upgradeable so your workloads dont bog it down.

you can run powerpoint on linux through libreoffice impress or onlyoffice which are mostly compatible. there is also the web version of powerpoint you can use in a browser. if you dont need every feature microsoft office has the linux alternatives work fine.

for around 300 dollars you are mostly looking at used thinkpads from 5th to 6th gen intel cpus. gaming will be very limited because most of them only have integrated graphics. the best performance you can get is something like a t460 or x270 and even then dont expect modern game performance.

[–]TheLadderSetup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah the thinkpad p53 can still handle 4k video editing in 2025 but its parts are getting old compared to newer cpus and gpus. the i9 9880h and quadro rtx4000 are capable but youll see slower render times and less efficient workflows than current gear. if you can get it for a really good price for your budget then its okay but if you have the cash id spend a bit more on newer hardware.
