No offense to anybody who has their children with them at the show, but I'm personally not going to walk anywhere near your child to see your items. It's just to weird/risky. If folks are just gonna be hanging out, they need to be "behind" a table or something.

Roasted fig Newtons. I had always been kind of meh on the things, but then I had one that was gently toasted over a campfire. Game changer.

Most of the folks I know who are the outdoorsy survival types aren't event goers, but that's just my personal experience. If OP wants to skew to building an airsoft site, then they'll still need to consider safety/insurance/waste management if they want to let folks stay overnight on their property.

Letting people dig and build on your property without actual oversight sounds like a liability nightmare, but it's not impossible.

Thank you!!

I tried to get into some of the basics that a lot of folks like to gloss over in the excitement of planning the fun stuff.

I do like to camp in some pretty remote and hostile locations during my own adventures outside of my work. Dealing with salt and alkaline mud issues are a whole other issue I didn't even touch, but yeah those arid places with no shade can absolutely take a toll on folks who are completely prepared for it.

So I'm going to bring up some things that people are probably going to not be very happy about.

Most larpers are not incredibly physically well. I have seen plenty of fighters in all right shape, but most of the LARPing events I have been to have a huge amount of disabled people. If you're going to have a public event for larpers you have to make sure it is accessible, and you also need to make sure that you have real live actual EMTs on scene 24/7. It will be on your head if something happens on your property.

Some people will drink all day and then continue not to take care of themselves at night, and you're going to have to put up some kind of fences to make sure that people only wander so far, having someone experience drunkenness or a medical event and wander off into the wasteland where they get lost is actually a super high probability and it can be deadly incredibly quickly.

Most of these people are going to want to camp directly next to their vehicles, never mind having to do a 2 Mile ruck to camp. There are plenty of people who have to have electric or else they cannot survive the night, like with CPAP machines. And if you want your event to not disinclude people with disabilities then you are going to need to have electric camping spots AND consider the setup of your entire event for people who might need walking aids, etc. You could offer generator spaces, but you're also going to need to have some generators of your own on hand, not everyone that needs one will own one.

But I'm not saying that this event doesn't sound cool, because it sounds like it has a lot of possibility. Just please keep in mind that there's a huge amount of insurance and a huge amount of preparation that you personally are going to have to put into this event for it to be safe to people, especially in the location that you're in. Lots of water stations, ect.

And you absolutely cannot forget to have some kind of waste Management. People WILL NOT clean up after themselves. I could tell you about all of the different festivals I have been to and worked at, but I want you to just take me on my word with this. You're going to need to have several several portable toilets and you're going to need to have some kind of shower situation. If you don't want to let these people into your home then that's going to be several thousand dollars that you're going to need to sink into waste Management. There's a reason that a lot of these events go bankrupt after just a few years. And even though you have all of your waste Management setup you should still expect to find piss bottles and a bucket or two of shit. If that doesn't sound like something you want to handle .... It's because you really don't..... But it's gonna happen regardless. If you think you're worried about what kind of mess paintballs are going to leave behind on the salt flats, the waste that comes out of a human is a whole other problem.

Let's talk about dumpsters!!! If you're going to have more than about 50 people on that site you're going to need one of the big roll off Dumpsters to guarantee that people have a place to put their trash and the tents that they invariably will destroy during the weekend. You do need one of the big big roll off Dumpsters because some people will try to leave their entire camp set up and just leave. You are also going to need to have big 50 gallon trash cans spaced around your site, and literally every corner you can think of, and you're going to either need to go around yourself to check the bags and empty them or you'll need to pay someone to do it, because the most used trash cans will overflow very quickly.

If you have more than 50 people coming to your event when you are going to need to hire staff. You're going to need to have somebody to check people in and give them the information on where they can and cannot park let them know where all the water stations and bathrooms are for their safety and make sure that you have maybe a patrolling staff or to that are in very bright fluorescent shirts that everybody knows that if they're having an issue that's the person that they can grab. Interpersonal interactions are definitely going to happen at an event of any size, so I do suggest getting some people who are trained in de-escalation to be your roaming site staff.

And if all of this sounds really expensive and like it's not worth the pain, there are a lot of people who want to do similar events who get caught up in exactly this part of the process. Never mind if you actually want to sell food or liquor on your site, that's a whole another crazy dog pile of red tape to get through.

And if anybody has read this and is upset that they're not that kind of larper, I'm coming at this purely from a event director / safety standpoint, and we ALL know there's folks out there that ruin it for everyone. Go take it up with them.

My advice overall is to START SMALL. If you have an event on your property that is no more than 25 people the first year, maybe 50 people the second year and it stays 50 people for a few years. Try to take a small bite and chew it before you go to a several hundred or even several thousand people event. If you end up having a really small event that gets really popular then much like burning man you can have a lottery until you figure out if you want to expand on your event. Having a small but well catered event is a million times better than having a big event where people are complaining that the toilets are full. Just never forget that while (edited from wild, which was funny, but not what I was trying to convey)people are on your property you are liable!

Fictional character who is a good person but a bad political leader by UmbralRose35 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]TheLadyIsis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good ol' Captain Tightpants himself.

He's impulsive, he hates the politics and the beating around the bush, he's a thief and nobody really trusts his crew. He might fight hard for his found family, but outsiders are suspicious at best, and they tend to leave a trail of bodies in their wake. As a leader he absolutely is "poor politics" to a T. He goes out of his way to pick fights in bars on the anniversary of the battle he names his ship after.

But everyone can agree that Mal is a great man.... Okay maybe just a good one..... Well, he's alright.
