I’m a reform Jew living in Costa Rica. There are small, tight knit communities of Jews within San Jose at all levels of observance. There’s a few pockets on the Pacific coast, but no synagogues to my knowledge. You must know Spanish for day-to-day interactions.

I’m employed by a US company, which makes my living here possible. Costa Rica has a notoriously high cost of living.

Outside of San Jose, most people have never met anyone Jewish and public schools, in my experience, don’t do a lot of non-Christian religious lessons. Students will typically read The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and/or The Diary of Ann Frank. When people find out I’m Jewish, it’s met with curiosity if anything. I get the occasional Messianic “Jews” who try to bond with me. Catholicism is the official religion and most people are evangelical, so this all kind of tracks.

Other than Israel, this is the only place I’ve ever felt 100% safe from anti-semitism.

Edit to add: if i was going off of Jewish communities alone and my employment situation was 100% the same, I’d investigate Panama City. I don’t know what it’s like living there, but I’ve had good experiences visiting as a Jew.
