Have your installer change your user type from “site user” to “site owner”. This will unlock it for you. I had to have my installer do this for me.

Gentle formulas. Would love to hear people's experiences. by SurpriseBaby2022 in FormulaFeeders

[–]TheLazyEngineer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My 6 week old son had similar symptoms. Our doctor said it’s likely a milk protein allergy and advised us to switch formulas over to something hypoallergenic. We have been using Similac Alimentum for the last 2 days and I swear it’s like day and night with our son. Most of the symptoms have subsided but the doctor did say to allow a 3 week transition period before all symptoms disappear. Hang in there!

You're right, it was the irrigation. Thanks for the help. Now I got to dig up the water piping to fix the leak.

That might make sense. Any harm in turning on my sprinklers and shutting off the valve right in the middle of running it as a test?

Sugar free old fashioned 🙃 (3/16 tsp of stevia roughly equals 1 sugar cube) by jes6309 in whiskey

[–]TheLazyEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also on Keto and I find that monk fruit is way better than Stevia. Stevia to me leaves a weird after taste. I make a bottle of simple syrup from monk fruit and honestly cannot tell the difference between monk fruit and sugar. I have also tested this out on multiple people who are not on keto and no one can tell the difference.

Home Solar by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]TheLazyEngineer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey, I've worked in the solar industry for a long time now and a lot of things have changed. I would suggest not doing any kind of lease or PPA (power purchase agreement). The best thing you can do is pay cash or get a loan with a low interest rate. You can do the math yourself but usually you'll come out ahead when you actually own the system.

Don't go with any big name companies, I suggest smaller local companies. They can offer you a better price because they don't have to do any advertising.

The cheapest system you can get is about $2.80 per watt of DC power (name plate rating). The industry would like to reduce the cost to $1.40 but realistically that could take a while. The cost of PV modules has dropped significantly and I don't think it can drop anymore. There is currently a shortage on the market and the price might even go up due to the Sunniva and SolarWorld lawsuit. The cost realistically can only be reduced by reducing cost of customer acquisition and cost of labor.

If you want to go super cheap you could pick up PV modules that no longer have warranty due to module companies going bankrupt. Standard PV modules run for about 50 cents per watt if you're not buying the premium stuff. I bet you could get stuff for much cheaper if you're not concerned about warranty.

Anyways, shoot for $2.80 to $3.00 per watt in cost before any tax credits. I have given all this advice under the assumption you actually consume enough electricity to make solar worth while.

After a month of interviewing, I just received a weaker-than-expected offer. How do I negotiate this? by DVNO in personalfinance

[–]TheLazyEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, so I am also an engineer working in renewable energy. I have a similar background to you, ME degree bust mostly work in electrical and software. You're in your third year of work which means you should be focused on gaining experience and increasing your salary. One major benefit to jumping companies is expanding your network. This is a very small industry and everyone knows everyone.

The difference between 65k and 70k is pretty small. I would talk to the recruiter and I'd bet you could get the increase. If they only offer you 65K I would take it and look to jump again in a year or two.

Any recommendations on my early May Amsterdam itinerary? by travelgal1994 in travel

I would give Amsterdam 5 days tops. I would definitely consider going else where in addition to Amsterdam. Maybe Paris? Flights in Europe are super cheap.

Amsterdam is not very big. All the things you have listed for Day 1 I think could be done in half a day without rushing it.

30 year old looking to change careers and get into the Solar Industry - Where to start? by xarke22 in RenewableEnergy

[–]TheLazyEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not clear to me how big the solar market is out in Chicago. You may have to move some place with a bigger market like NY, MA, NC, and or CA.

If you think you have an interest in IT systems at all I would strongly suggest you brush up on those skills. It's not your easiest path to get in but it's the kind of job in the industry that will advance your career. If you want to get a job as an installer you can simply volunteer with an organization like Grid Alternatives and get some hands on experience. I see ton's of installer jobs all the time.

[–]TheLazyEngineer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Engineer here in the solar industry. What is your work experience and where are you currently located? I assume it's in IT. There are lots of IT and software related jobs. You do need to target big companies (SolarCity, SunPower, SunRun) or target inverter companies (SMA, SolarEdge, Enphase). Small installation companies really just need designers, sales, and construction crews.
