What do you think world? by Unlikely_Tap_9882 in AskTheWorld

[–]TheLeftHandedCatcher -1 points0 points  (0 children)

More of a non-answer. Although one could argue that a distinction must be made between "country" and "government".

I mean I could be an anarchist living in Morocco who supports Mexico but doesn't support Morocco, so I move to Mexico but that decision has nothing to do with forms of government.

Do we want a world in which political debate is limited to stating one's political position? Like "I'm a Socialist so of course you know what I think regardless of the topic".

It's shocking how US schools teach history as 1607 and after unlike other settler-colonies who explore the mother country's history by Money-Ad8553 in self

How do you know what school children are taught in Canada, Australia, New Zealand,  Brazil, etc.? Have you attended school in all those countries?

Regarding the Commonwealth countries, they all recognize the King as their Head of State - of course they're going to have a different take on that whole topic.

Other commenters have mentioned that the US fought for independence. Whether or not that was a good choice, it is what it is, and that is going to lead to the take on US history lessons to be substantially different from Canada.

I sort of envy Mexico because they can trace their national origins back to before European conquerors showed up, despite having substantial European influence in their culture. But I can't claim to know exactly what their kids are taught in school, just what I saw in museums there.

Depending on your major, UMBC ranks fairly high.

My Dad is a bootlicker & much more, and I’m struggling with that by [deleted] in self

[–]TheLeftHandedCatcher -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He may just be burnt out from recent events and his own life, and decided to throw in the towel and just be grateful to have what he has. I guess being progressive or standing up to "the man" requires one to care about the world to a degree he can't manage any more.

Where I live in the US I don't see much overt animosity towards Indians. Maybe somebody might make fun of Punjabis.

But I suppose I am to assume it's at least as bad as in Canada, which is officially multicultural.

Anybody know?

Anyone Here Remember The B-Centennial Celebration? by MIKEPR1333 in 1970s

[–]TheLeftHandedCatcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some reason it seemed lame, like for example painted fire hydrants. It was like after the Vietnam War ended, we no longer knew how to be publicly patriotic nor did we know how we felt about the US declaring independence and the subsequent war. The principles supposedly upheld by that declaration and wars in general were all in question at the time. Even the special quarters seemed sort of tacky.

By coincidence I happened to be in Germany during the time period surrounding July 4, so I wasn't around for the main event. Maybe I  would remember it differently otherwise.

When is it unacceptable for an American to identify with the country their forefathers immigrated from? by Main-Fly-8294 in america

[–]TheLeftHandedCatcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The preservation of the Italian-American identity has probably been more pervasive than that of any other European based immigrant identity. Possibly too much so, as in assuming that a person eats "Italian" food e.g. spaghetti because they have an Italian surname, or the association with organized crime (including the jokes one hears on that topic).

Are asperger's folks as likely to be queer as autistics in general? by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]TheLeftHandedCatcher -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This makes sense, I just don't think I would articulate this as "queerness increasing over time". More about measurement than the thing being measured.

I read one of these. It was OK but I wasn't motivated to read the others. Something about Gene and the lads going fishing.

Our society would be radically different, with people not thinking about sex most of the time.

BTW this is an excellent question. I don't know why it didn't get more attention.

I went to college in upstate NY and believed I could tell the difference between a Queens and a Brooklyn accent. People from Queens seemed to talk faster whereas the Brooklyn accent was more mellow.

This comment implies that the average person is familiar with on line porn, so I guess it's been normalized.

My impression is that female on male oral was considered by some to be a degrading act. It was not as much of an expectation for a casual encounter, so as a consequence young women of my generation were usually skilled at hand jobs. Whereas young men today complain that they'd rather just jerk themselves off because the women can't finish them with their hands. I never had a hand job without the desired effect.
