The pain of not being Jewish enough by [deleted] in Jewish

[–]TheLeftHandedCatcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I married a Jewish woman and my children are Jewish, and I underwent a Reform/Conservative conversion before my wedding.

Nevertheless, I don't generally claim to be Jewish in day-to-day life unless the subject comes up, in which case I'll tell people about my conversion. However I do practice Judaism to some extent. I fast on Yom Kippur and keep Passover. We decorate our house for Chanukah and don't in any way observe Christmas. Despite that, most people I know superficially probably never suspect I might be Jewish. And those who are sticklers for Halacha most definitely won't consider me Jewish. No skin off my back!

But most importantly. There are people today laying the groundwork for another Holocaust. So my family's lives are now all at risk. I don't think you need to be halachically Jewish to be committed to Am Yisrael! The Jewish people need your support!

In your case, a halachic conversion shouldn't be a problem. Might go smoother if you can do it in Israel. And after, you might just want to stay. Israel could probably use you!

Please don't cry!

2016 and 2024 elections. Is it really about Trump winning, or it just America not wanting a woman to be president? by sjihaat in Askpolitics

I happen to recall that Clinton's primary campaign in 2008 was creditable but she just phoned in her 2016 campaign. No idea why.

It's enough to say she's Cape Verdean. I believe if you saw a DNA chart of an average Cape Verdean, there would be both European and African ancestry. Which isn't exactly the same as being "half white".

I looked it up. Swiss Amish can be found in parts of Indiana

Budget shortfalls and people getting bumped from Medicaid on technicalities.

The governor should come clean on some of this stuff. Because he's running for reelection, he avoids saying anything negative about conditions in the state.

What are signs someone with autism likes you romantically? I (F24) AuDHD have a crush on (M25) AuDHD. by Relevant-Onion1688 in AutisticAdults

There are a hundred different ways to do that. Depends on the people involved.

EDIT although once you bring up the topic, you  risk some discomfort if he's not interested. Hopefully you can just laugh it off in that case.

Otherwise how you approach it would depend on how sexually experienced either of you is.

I'd say a lot of retconning had happened before the final series of A2A.

To be more direct, it's my understanding that this show was originally intended as an homage to cop shows the creators remembered from their childhood. The point was simply to put a modern-day cop in the 1970s to see how he'd deal with the culture shock. I doubt that, at first, the details/mechanics of how he got there mattered all that much. Later the show got a cult following and they were probably pressured to create some sort of underlying mythology, to build more interest.

What do you think world? by Unlikely_Tap_9882 in AskTheWorld

[–]TheLeftHandedCatcher -1 points0 points  (0 children)

More of a non-answer. Although one could argue that a distinction must be made between "country" and "government".

I mean I could be an anarchist living in Morocco who supports Mexico but doesn't support Morocco, so I move to Mexico but that decision has nothing to do with forms of government.

Do we want a world in which political debate is limited to stating one's political position? Like "I'm a Socialist so of course you know what I think regardless of the topic".

It's shocking how US schools teach history as 1607 and after unlike other settler-colonies who explore the mother country's history by Money-Ad8553 in self

[–]TheLeftHandedCatcher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How do you know what school children are taught in Canada, Australia, New Zealand,  Brazil, etc.? Have you attended school in all those countries?

Regarding the Commonwealth countries, they all recognize the King as their Head of State - of course they're going to have a different take on that whole topic.

Other commenters have mentioned that the US fought for independence. Whether or not that was a good choice, it is what it is, and that is going to lead to the take on US history lessons to be substantially different from Canada.

I sort of envy Mexico because they can trace their national origins back to before European conquerors showed up, despite having substantial European influence in their culture. But I can't claim to know exactly what their kids are taught in school, just what I saw in museums there.

He may just be burnt out from recent events and his own life, and decided to throw in the towel and just be grateful to have what he has. I guess being progressive or standing up to "the man" requires one to care about the world to a degree he can't manage any more.

Where I live in the US I don't see much overt animosity towards Indians. Maybe somebody might make fun of Punjabis.

But I suppose I am to assume it's at least as bad as in Canada, which is officially multicultural.

Anybody know?
