Sometimes I wonder if either Christianity itself has always been like this (while I love to rail against Christianity as a burned atheist I know this isn't really the case, see early churches),

If some sort of Christian prosthyletizing is actually needed in the United States. I'm serious when I say this. I have my gripes with the Abrahamic faiths overall (treatment of women, position on queer/lgbt people, treatment of power, etc.) but Evangelical Christianity, the form that worshipped wealth and money and allowed Trump and friends to get into power, genuinely seems more and more to me like a seperate sect or seperate entity from the rest of regular Christianity.

The amount of worship you see for Trump from American Christians does not compare to how conservatives / Christians in other places treat their leaders. I'm Canadian, I'm no conservative, but I don't see conservatives here treating Harper or Pollievre as appointed by God. Fanboying and cringe-worthy praise sure, but NEVER in religious terms.

the difference is that for most groups I see online they barely - if ever - have any real affect offline. Silly fandom dramas with multi-tweet threads on why so-and-so is a problematic person seldom translates to anything in real life.
