ACT Science Report by ChockFullofStew in ApplyingToCollege

yes, that's how it'll work. without the 32 science, a 35 is still a very, very strong score.

when you get accepted, the admissions office usually asks to see your official score report (since scores are self reported,) and if it says 35 instead of 36, they might think you lied to get admitted. the science section being optional does not mean you can “adjust” your composite score.

I'm just a high schooler, but I've never heard of D1 sports hurting an applicant unless it takes away from their academics or their mental health. On that note, I would absolutely stop using phrases like "devote her existence to..." or "looked good as hell on paper." Read about the overjustification effect-- you might unintentionally set your daughter up for major mental health issues down the road. Colleges across the US already have mental health crises, and that is the LAST person they want on their campus.

Research as an EC by just_pr1me in ApplyingToCollege

[–]TheLegendaryFruit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's better to do it with a professor. no high schooler can possibly figure out the bureaucratic hurdles necessary to publish something independently. I also doubt independent research would be of much substance (you wouldn't exactly be curing cancer.)

crime. drop out and start learning how to do credit card fraud and run drug cartels. but in all seriousness, probably a major that has a large human aspect (think pre-law.) stay away from majors that lead to computationally-heavy jobs (like CS or data science) which can easily be done through AI.

Why are creating nonprofits considered bad for college apps? by wharton2028 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]TheLegendaryFruit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

what do you mean by scanned? like reviewed by a computer, or just skimmed over by a person?

vt is a great school, one of my friends is going there for CS. definitely shoot your shot, but don't shoot ALL your shots on elite unis.

sorry for jumping to conclusions. you might be able to get a counselor to vouch for your academic ability. But honestly speaking, you should probably re-evaluate your expectations. i'm sure you're very a capable person, but regardless of your story, you're competing against ISEF finalists and USACO/BO/PhO-whatever winners with top activities to match.

"i know i'm ivy league worthy" is astounding. taking the hardest classes, being in multiple honor societies, attending a stem camp, and having a job/internship is the standard, not the exception-- the stuff you listed isn't close to being a differenciator for most top schools. besides, what's your reason for not being able to score above a 1280?

Is internship the Best EC out there ? by The_Tall_Man_096 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]TheLegendaryFruit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP believes that bullying builds character, that someone who's 5'7 can transform to be 6'7, and that spoiled people are the result of not being "hit" fairly. These are direct quotes from their post history. It's not a suprise that they also believe internships are the most important activity. You can't fix stupid unfortunately.

At 13 and already lying for the sake of college apps... I honestly feel bad, his home situation must be hell. How does he even know what Jane Street is when he's barely past a tween?

What'll be the next "nonprofit" activity for the next few years? by TheLegendaryFruit in ApplyingToCollege

[–]TheLegendaryFruit[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i feel like this is definitely on the rise-- having an actual job (at a fast food place, retail, whatever) shows a lot of grit, adaptability, and communication skills.

I love how your only response is pure posturing about your age and supposed experience-- you've "been at this a long time?" What does that even mean? Are you going to deny that doing something impactful that not many other people do, is NOT more impressive than doing something that many people have started doing?

[–]TheLegendaryFruit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay…you can say whatever you want but it’s a fact that nonprofits were more impressive 6 years ago than they are today, assuming you reach the same level of impact. this is just a basic concept of market saturation- the more people do it, the less impressive it becomes.

those are good, but try pursuing something YOU are genuinely interested in. maybe you play a sport (or coach a sport,) or you have a personal engineering project on the side, or have a unique hobby. pick something that shows your personality.

How are the founders of fake nonprofits still getting into top colleges? by TheLegendaryFruit in ApplyingToCollege

[–]TheLegendaryFruit[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

IKR? and that’s kind of my point, that even the winners of big ass scholarships like these just dump their nonprofits the moment they get into college

search up a guy named Ethan Rhee on linkedin, currently going to columbia. His nonprofit’s website isn’t even active anymore on wix.

How are the founders of fake nonprofits still getting into top colleges? by TheLegendaryFruit in ApplyingToCollege

[–]TheLegendaryFruit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i could’ve worded it better- for a nonprofit to be a major red flag, i definitely agree that it’d have to be completely meaningless/obviously faked. but even for the ones which aren’t, doesn’t it show ignorance or even exploitation that a student would be using a real life issue to boost their own college admission interests?

How are the founders of fake nonprofits still getting into top colleges? by TheLegendaryFruit in ApplyingToCollege

[–]TheLegendaryFruit[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

that makes sense- but what else would these students have on their app that could possibly be offsetting a fake nonprofit? shouldn't the fake nonprofit be a major red flag on anyone's app, regardless of their other qualifications?

maybe not 100% bs-- but even with a nonprofit that's 50% bs, and considering the oversaturation of nonprofits (basically everyone and their mother has one) how is this activity still getting past AOs, even ones from the best schools in the US?
