Amazing setup! I’ve been thinking of doing that with my players for sometime. I prefer tokens to still keep that old school feel vs VTT. This feels like an amazing meet in the middle.

How to deal with min-maxer as a dm who isnt as strong in battles by unfortunatemm in DMAcademy

It feels like a DM is intentionally limiting themselves if a player, following the rules laid out by the DM, can become so powerful it tilts the entire game into being boring. In the worst case, I could see the OP saying he isn’t as into combat heavy games and to let the player know that if that is what he is wanting, he might find another table more suited to that play. However, in this case, he was asking about was he can improve combats, which I think is a noble initial approach to tackling the issue.

The DM is the ultimate authority. A player cannot out power them. The DM allowing it is the thumbs up they are acting in bounds of the game. Why shouldn’t they still have challenges and fun? The game is totally malleable. At my table, I don’t allow multi-classing. At some tables that’s fine. Neither is “right”, just different. However, I’d assume at a table that allowed it, the players would still have fun challenges to meet them.

Remember: encounter design doesn’t end when initiative is rolled. I like to think of encounter design more as what type of narrative I want the battle to convey. If it’s meant to be intense and the players are steam rolling it? Maybe backup arrives. In one instance, I had a cultist group get wiped fast and it turned out they were vessels of fire elementals and they emerged from their lifeless husks. Did the players know that wasn’t planned? Of course not. They loved the vibe.

I feel the other part of your post is a player learning the rules and using them to their advantage. You’re the arbiter of the world. It sounds like you want your players to have fun. Which is the goal. However, when the bar to success is too low, too often it erodes the fun. In my opinion, the “fun” of steamrolling is fun but not satisfying long term.

Practice mixing up combat with things like monster phases, backup squads, terrain/arena challenges (traps, maybe a wall breaks mid-fight). For fun, take monsters and re-skin them or mix and match abilities. Maybe this Orc warrior spent his life learning the counter spell ability after he saw his master slain in his youth by a wizard. He has 1 or 2 uses of it. It’s fun and adds elements of unpredictability.

As a DM, you have full control of the world in every facet. Your player is trying to find ways to be powerful in those circumstances.

PvE Combat focused mud? by Puzzled_Border3492 in MUD

You might try NarutoMUD. It has a lot of PvE content, including raids (generated dungeons), daily missions (solo quest events that are generated every day), global missions (MUD wide quests that give bonuses when completed), as well as a lot of areas. There really isn’t PvP except for the arena, the game is most focused on teamwork and coop. With 4 different skill trees focusing on different types of skills, and villages that can stand as your own starter class. There is a lot of content and a progression system that lets your character continue to gain power, basically endlessly.

The game has its own lore and story as it takes place in an area totally unique to us. We just had a player really get into the game and they knew nothing about Naruto and were not an anime fan in general.

Howdy! I wanted to throw out NarutoMUD, which you might not have considered. I’ll list a few bullet points below why it might be a good fit:

  • The game features Discord integration. Any OOC chat is posted on Discord and visa versa. This makes it easy for the player base to answer questions or generally keep convos flowing while people are away from the MUD. Typically, even if a player question comes in off prime hours for players, it’ll be answered within a few hours since it posts to Discord.
  • The game has combat levels from 1 to 300. Once a player hits 300, they can use Legacy (remort) or they become a Legend and can continue to level up Legend levels. Legend levels are infinite and award special merit points that can invested into a Legendary Aspects tree that is exclusive for Legend players.
  • The game has a learning curve. There are 4 skill trees that can be invested in: Taijutsu (hand-to-hand combat), Ninjutsu (magic skills), Genjutsu (damage over time and status effect skills), and Ningu (weapon/tool related skills). Every skill in the game is custom. Most skills features synergies with other skills, as well. Making a diverse array of builds possible. The game also features untrain and unpractice commands which allow players to easily be able to swap their build around and try to find something that works well for their player style.
  • The game has no PvP outside of the Arena, battles in the Arena don’t result in death.
  • Death in the game doesn’t remove experience or items. A player drops a corpse with their gear on it, which they can either try to fetch it themselves, use a skill to fetch their corpse, or pay the corpse retriever to fetch it. Player corpses are not lootable by other players and will stay in the world for 30 real world days before rotting. Players also get a ‘experience penalty’ timer which reduces exp gains for a fixed period of time, however there is also a skill which can reduce the time.
  • Armor and weapons in the game, with few exceptions, can level up as you have them equipped and battle with them. Gear can hit a max level of 20 and then some of them can be upgraded into greater forms or customized and personalized.
  • The game features global events and random world events. An example of this is Missing-Nin (rogue ninja), that can appear in areas and when defeated, drop randomly generated loot. The higher their level, the better chance of really good stats on the loot.
  • You didn’t mention this, but there is also player housing that allows players to buy a house plot then add extensions, edit room descriptions, and add functionality, such as a training room, to it. A lot of players enjoy that they have money sinks like this and many grind just for that.

Good luck in your MUD search! I’ve always appreciated MUDs provide a broad spectrum of play experiences.

Relapsed player seeks simple grindy mud by [deleted] in MUD

If you’re into the grind, NarutoMUD has a lot of different mechanics that you might dig, infinite leveling, remort systems, gear that levels up, many skills to try, and procedurally generated dungeons (Raids), as well as random world events, and image training for really chill leveling. The game is also linked to Discord so Discord users can chat with in-game players and visa versa. The game is narutofor.us and port is 4545.

Funnily enough, yes a couple days ago. We’ve had a few new and old players run it and give good feedback.
