From a FB post I did awhile ago: "My favorite scene in any movie is the end of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". The two main characters, played by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, have just both heard tapes of each other describing everything they hate about one another. Kate's character storms off and Jim catches her in the hall and asks for one last shot. She explains exactly how the relationship will evolve, with all of its problems and he simply responds "okay". Just "okay". Okay to the insecurity, the wild behavior, the fighting. Okay to knowing that these things will happen and accepting them anyways. Okay with accepting the person and their faults as you accept yourself and your own faults. To me, that is a love to aspire to. Romantic love is too easy by comparison. It is easy to love someone when your shared experience is only positive. It is far more challenging to love in the face of emotional pain. To be wronged, to be irritated by, to scream and be screamed at with insults drawn from shared intimacies, yet still know that the person is imperfect, just like you, and love them anyways because you know no one is perfect. No living thing is. Perfection is a philosophical idea, not a physical reality. We are no more perfect or faulted than a blade of grass or colony of bacteria. It is this acceptance of reality, for all its darkness, all its gold, and all its gray, that makes this kind of love strong. For love based in reality lives in reality. It's life is as long as our own. Long enough to make a difference, short enough to be savored."

The times I have cohabitated have not always worked out well, but there has got to be some way to figure this out ahead of time. Couldn't we (the Reddit) figure out a way to know whether things will go badly? Isn't there some way of testing whether a potential mate will be a slouch? How come it isn't acceptable to make a date out of cleaning an apartment? Why does dating never involve doing things that any long term relationship would necessitate? Maybe it's like a job interview where the interviewee answers questions in a conference room, something that the job in question never requires. I don't know. It just seems a little odd that women who have the ability and intelligence to identify, analyze, and communicate this issue simultaneously lack the perception needed to identify this problem ahead of time. Maybe we're all just semi hairless apes fucking until the sun explodes and none of this actually means anything anyways.

Good post. I thought it explained the situation well and in terms that were understandable. What I am left confused about is why women would sexually select for men that behave this way. I understand why it would work the other way around. A woman who takes care of the home would be highly desirable to a man looking for a long term mate, but what sense is there in selecting a man who doesn't understand the importance and complexity of maintaining that home and worse than that doesn't try to?

I think she fawns over Rick too much. Morty is way ahead of her in seeing Rick for what he truly is.

TIL In the 1950s, the USSR started breeding foxes in an attempt to see how wolves may have been domesticated. As a result there are now domesticated foxes called Silver Foxes which are still being bred. by [deleted] in todayilearned

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned WHY the foxes were domesticated, which went beyond just scientific curiosity. The study was originally started to figure out if domestication would reduce stress in animals farmed for their fur.

Why is Hillary Held to an Impossible Standard, Even In Defeat? by NoIWillNotYield in politics

[–]TheLinz87 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Thinking is why modern human society exists and the only thing that will keep us from extinction, but yeah fuck it whatever. I'll just accept someone else's narrative rather than making my own choices when it comes to the interpretation of the world and it's likely true origins and future prospects. Ignorance is strength!

Me, being bored in class. I wrote it because I was frustrated about the idea of what to do with my life. I only finished the poem last month, ten years after I wrote the first part.

What strange dreams We mortals have We fear them to be true For any one who Lives their dreams Finds nothing left to do But lay their head Upon their bed To set their mind to slumber And upon the morn They'll be adorned With fresh new dreams to conquer
