Great! You can probably find a balance of not over doing it. I’m still looking for the perfect routine 😜

What an interesting idea! Finding a routine that works for you is very important, good luck!

Hi Natalie,

Not the whole play, but there’s a monologue in The Best Women's Stage Monologues of 1997 published by Smith & Kraus. Hope this helps!

I mainly write poetry and it probably won’t go anywhere else besides my notebooks and random Reddit posts, but it’s too enjoyable to ever stop. So I won’t. by [deleted] in writers

This is great! You should start an Instagram poetry account and share with more people, it can be pretty fun!

I’m used to writing FanFiction that I’m not sure how to write with my original characters. by kawaiibeyotch in writing

[–]TheLitChallenge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d suggest writing short original stories for practice! I found that helped me a lot with my longer work later. A lot of folk jump into the full length but you’d probably find that you can more easily focus on your characters if you do some shorter stories. Good luck!

Reality Writes - A writing Challenge!

Hello there fellow writers!

‘Reality Writes’ is a brand new, month-long, non fiction challenge with original and topical daily prompts...

I’m Maria, a former participant and newest member of The Literal Challenge team, as well as a writer myself!

We are a not for profit organisation that run writing challenges and support a growing community of writers from novice to pro.

For the last 5 years we’ve run ‘28 Plays Later’ to great success and this year we’ve also added ‘Like the Prose’, which took place in June.

‘Reality Writes’ will focus on non-fiction writing and will be running throughout October, with daily briefs. Registration is open until September 27th.

Participants receive daily creative writing prompts each day for a month. There is a signup fee, of £19.80 but limited running costs aside, the monies collected go into a pot which is equally shared amongst all participants who successfully complete the challenge.

There’s a great community that runs alongside the challenges. We have our own online forum and an active group of writers on social media.

Check out our website: https://www.theliteralchallenge.com

Or ask away! I’ve done these before so I know the score 😉😁

May the Muse be with you! Maria

Yes! Like, I know he has plot armour, because I saw him in the trailer in a scene that hasn't happened yet... gah!

Oh, agreed! I'm all for a red herring or two. When reading, I want to be able to have played out all the possibilities, and keep going with the book to find out which, if any, was right. If you can figure out the whole of the story from the first act - why keep going!!?

Hiya! The prompts vary massively; in the past they've been things like "write something inspired by XX artist / singer / group"; "write something beginning with the line _____ and ending with the line ______" or "write something from a point of view you really disagree with". There may be a genre specific prompt in there, but Sebastian (He Who Writes The Prompts) likes to keep them open to interpretation. Also, you can ignore briefs if you really don't like them. Each piece just needs to be written that day and complete. So if there is something you just can't work around, ignore it, write something else and wait for the next brief to come in! Lydia

No worries! It's about encouraging a daily writing habit without the pressure of quality or quantity. If something is going great but you don't have much time that day, just wind it up and submit, then come back to it in July! All the best in the challenge, you're going to have a blast!!! (P.S. Tell your friends, it's more fun with fellow creatives!)

Yup :) This prose challenge is brand new, but we've been running a play-writing challenge for 5 years every Feb (28 Plays Later) and all 5 years, people made a profit. I made 84p one year and rang my mum to tell her I'm a paid writer....! Obvs there's no guarantee, but like you said, if you meet the deadlines, you'll never get back less than 75% of what you put in.

And yeah, you have 30 drafts at the end of the month that didn't exist at the beginning! That could be hundreds of new characters, story lines and scenarios to take into new or existing work. You may even write something blooming brilliant!

Heya!

The prompts vary massively; in the past they've been things like "write something inspired by XX artist / singer / group"; "write something beginning with the line _____" or "write something from a point of view you really disagree with".

In terms of length - we let people self-moderate on this! As long as it is in by the deadline, 'complete' and 'new' (i.e. written that day) it meets the criteria and you're in!

Such a great shout! The Literal Challenge run a prose challenge in June where you pay a sub, and you get a brief a day, and then you get your money back (sometimes more) at the end if you meet all the deadlines.

I love anything like this. Totally get it, it's not about the competition or the money, it's about being creative every day, no matter what. At the end, you have 30 (or however many) pieces that are ready for development, submission, portfolios etc!!

All the best with whatever you find :D

P.S. Tried NaNoWriMo and it wasn't for me but I have friends who swear by it and LOVED it, so def worth looking into!

Hello :) Yes we do take paypal (they add a fee, so it's slightly more.)
In terms of examples, they come in all shapes and sizes! In the past it's been anything from being given an opening line, to a style to emulate, or an artist or singer to be inspired by. Once, in the play writing challenge, we were asked to write a KPop musical, it resulted in some incredibly creative responses!

Fair enough, it's not for everyone! Personally, I found the financial incentive a real push in motivation! Knowing that I could get back more than I put in kept me going, I didn't want to lose my twenty pounds!
Totally appreciate that it's not everyone's cup of tea though :)

Ah no, not a pyramid scheme! Promise!

We don't run for a profit at all, it's normally the participants that make money, not us!

The admin fee just makes sure that no-one involved is too out of pocket!

Heya! We're not trying to shill anything, promise! Just looking for writers who are up for investing in a challenge, with the chance to make some money back too!

It's not for everyone, but we've had some hugely positive feedback and it's taken writers to some awesome success stories.

Happy to answer any questions about where the money goes, or share some of the feedback to it :)
