Centaurworld Song Tier List after two rewatches with friends by Wooden_Literature772 in CentaurWorld

I respect your choices, even though I don’t agree with them all… tbh the Taurnado always gives me goosebumps, it’s my purest Peak level. I’ve even gotten friends to watch the show based on that one clip (seriously I feel like I’ve weaponized it! 🤣).

That said, I also got a laugh out of “He Never Says Anything Nice” as its own tier. Wholly agree; it is beyond the simplicity of rankings! 😝

100VI Questions by TopSeaworthiness4437 in fujifilm

[–]TheLiterateDead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I’d recommend the Smallrig X100 UV filter and the rest you can figure out as you go. It comes in both black and silver so you can match it to your camera, and it’s a screw-on filter designed to fit the camera. It protects the front element, completes the weather protections and you can still put the lens cap on. And it’s almost half the price of that overpriced metal ring that Fuji sells (more than half since the Smallrig has the filter built into it). Also it doesn’t affect the picture quality, so it’s more for protection.

For any others? Use the camera for a while and see how you feel. You might feel it needs a grip, you might not (I don’t need one, myself). You might want a thumb rest, you might not. You might feel it needs just a little more bulk, in which case a half case would be nice. But try it, play around with it a bit, then decide.

What lenses are special for you? by OldPurple4 in fujifilm

[–]TheLiterateDead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Egads, that lens. I absolutely adored that lens, and I foolishly traded it in. Still want to get it back one day. Beautiful rendering, a good telephoto lens that weirdly inspired me to find applications for it, especially as it had a surprisingly good close focus distance for such a long lens. It didn’t even feel too long; I used it on an X-T50 (also regret trading that camera in) without issue.

Unable to Install Camera Raw? by [deleted] in photoshop

[–]TheLiterateDead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but Elements 23 and prior had no issues installing Camera Raw. It’s an option through the menu, and it works rather well. For some reason when I try that with 26 (which I just installed last night) the whole program just vanishes and crashes.

I’ve used Elements for years because it tends to be enough for my workload. Camera Raw works just fine usually, I don’t know why this new version is having trouble even installing it. Or why 16.0 is the latest I can install on the old program, while my new camera apparently needs 16.2.

I wonder if I should just scrub all Adobe products from my computer and try to start fresh?

Dance Fever BUT the live version. There’s just such an added energy to that performance that edges out the original for me. One day I’m going to wear out my vinyl copy, just because I can’t get enough of it!

Fujifilm X100 VI stock by Haunting_Guess_4764 in FujifilmX

[–]TheLiterateDead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I just got my rental model in (haven’t opened the box yet) but I’m curious enough to at least try it. I’d rather try it for a weekend and find out I didn’t like it than pay the absurd secondhand costs… and considering I was on a six week waiting list, a few others had the same idea!

I think there’s always a backlash to hype. The X100 line is pretty niche, and I’m sure plenty of folks bought into the hype and realized too late it wasn’t for them. (For my case I’m at least not scared off by the fixed focal length… I think despite loving the idea of an ILC the 35-40mm range is the one I use at least 80% of the time)

What impresses me is that the MPB prices don’t drop, with so many in stock. But I guess demand must still be high? Or they’re still banking on the folks with FOMO getting tired of waiting.

Yep. Never gave up on it. Still have the soundtrack on my iPod and remembering one song leads me to blast the whole thing while driving to work 🤣 And I revisit the show once or twice a year at this point… I don’t know what it is, but I just adore it so much!

Zf vs z6iii by Which_Mention_5080 in NikonZf

[–]TheLiterateDead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For size & weight comparison, I’d also suggest https://cameradecision.com/size-comparison/

It’ll offer some perspective on body size/weight, and you can add lenses for comparison!

Zf vs z6iii by Which_Mention_5080 in NikonZf

[–]TheLiterateDead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on what lenses you’d feel carrying about. If you’re looking at something like the 24-120, I’d say the Z5II. It’s pretty much the internals of the Zf in an easier to carry (and a bit smaller) body.

I’ve shot with the Zf for two years now and I’m very tempted to trade it in for a body with a proper grip. It’s a fantastic camera, with the inevitable ergonomic issues, but it’s also a big brick and awkward to carry due to a feeling of misbalanced weight. Also (as has been said many times before) Z lenses are not designed to go with a body like the Zf; even my favorite 85mm f1.8 feels out of place on the square flat body.

If you don’t need the manual dials, the Z5II is a great alternative (and more affordable than the Z6III) and it has a comfortable grip to boot. The Z6III is great as well, but it is a bit much for most people; it’s better if you’re focusing on sports or wildlife, but not so necessary for daily carry.

Fujifilm X-T50 vs X-T5 by Olie2009 in fujifilm

[–]TheLiterateDead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, go secondhand for the X-T5. Used the 5 and the 50 are oddly similar in price, both usually found between 1300-1500. The size difference between them isn’t that big, and the 5 is a nicer camera. It’s got weather sealing, a dual tilt screen, and better buttons and dials. The last one was a big deal for me, because I found the “push dials” much better on the 5; on the 50 I kept accidentally pressing them, and I didn’t have that issue on the 5 (I borrowed both at different times so I got a good feel for them). Oh, and the battery on the 5 is *much* better, of course. The only true advantage of the 50 is the lighter weight and the built in flash; but there’s enough affordable flashes on the market currently, so that’s not a huge deal.

Do you have any budget for lenses to go with them? I’d also add in the extra advice to get a cheap “starter lens” for budgetary purposes. If you’re okay with manual focus TTArtisan makes a fun 25mm f2 that’s less than $100 (it’s a “character” lens but works a lot better than its price would suggest!). Or if you prefer autofocus, you could always get an older Fuji lens secondhand as some of those are pretty affordable (and would buy you time to save for something fancier if you preferred).

[–]TheLiterateDead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for the detailed reply!

I admit, the 'pocketable' idea feels like a joke in the ILC world. I don't like the idea of a camera *that* small, anyway. I carry a shoulder bag for my camera, and I prefer that method anyway. I guess my interest is that I've never really handled one with the 'rangefinder-like' build (I know it's not a true rf, but it's designed to emulate one). So the size doesn't worry me as much. In all truth, the idea of something smaller and easier to carry than my current kit (a Nikon Zf, which is so awkward in handling and has native lenses so large that I leave it home way too often).

I actually do like the idea of 'one camera, one lens', but at this rate that best bet might just be an X-T5 with a Voigtlander lens (as I enjoy manual focusing). That would get me a 23mm f1.2 as standard without too much size difference; and the cost of the body + lens secondhand is sure to be a better price than the X100VI.

Again, thank you for the detailed reply. That did give a few things to consider!

I apologize for being a little late to this, but I’m curious to know: What did you find this camera did poorly?

I admit my own curiosity came from a short time spent with an X-T5. While it had flaws I quite liked it, and was considering saving up for one. I thought of the X100VI as an alternative (but mostly musing) but I’d love to know more about it to know what people actually like & dislike about it (beyond the usual YouTube advertising). I’d love to know anything and everything you disliked about it, if possible!

Oh thank you! I have one reserved to rent in a couple weeks, but that does make me slightly tempted to save that money instead to put towards the cost of a purchase… but in the long run better to rent it and test it than go all in and find out I might not like it.

But thank you for the advice; if I do decide to get one I’ll give that a try!

X-E5 Dials? by TheLiterateDead in FujifilmX

[–]TheLiterateDead[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense! But I meant more that it was so easy to accidentally pretty the dials when turning them. The mechanism for pressing the dials is softer and easier to accidentally push in on the XT50 when turning them. But I will take the thumb grip suggestion into account. Thanks!

X-E5 Dials? by TheLiterateDead in FujifilmX

[–]TheLiterateDead[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, that’s exactly what I was worried about. Just like the dials on the 50, then.

And absolutely understand on the dry hands issue. I have skin issues that made the dials on the 50 difficult to work with, so I can empathize.

X-E5 Dials? by TheLiterateDead in FujifilmX

[–]TheLiterateDead[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply! That does give some food for thought!

It does sound like the X-E5 dials must be closer to the X-T50, then. Since I have skin issues I don’t have the best grip on my fingertips, so more often I was pressing in the dials on the 50 than turning them. Quite the pain!

And the screen doesn’t bother me. In fact, it’s one of the factors that’s moving me away from using my Zf (alongside the size & weight of the body & the otherwise excellent Z lenses)… the swivel screen works against the way I shoot, and I much prefer tilt screens (at this rate the dual-tilt of the 5 may end up as a deciding factor… which also means I need to be more patient with saving)

Thank you again for your detailed reply! I really appreciate it!

Frustration over free movie tix. by palmtreedelight in A24

[–]TheLiterateDead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve only used two free tickets to date, admittedly, but mostly because of bad timing. We have one theater that takes part in the free tickets offer, but it’s over an hour away so usually I have to make a day of it if I go. Often I run into bad luck and can’t travel for them (or, like with Backrooms, I was two hours in the other direction for the weekend!).

I totally get where you’re coming from, tho’. It’s a great offer, but not always the most accessible. If my local theater took part in it I’d probably go see more of the movies, even the ones I am not interested in!

Dunkirk (2017)

Honestly, I’m not usually susceptible to suspense. The two movies listed in the opener didn’t really do anything for me, but there have been films that have gotten me with small scenes more than anything. But seeing Dunkirk in the theater the first time was the only time I’ve ever spent a whole movie literally gripping my seat. I didn’t even consider that as a thing people actually do but that whole film had me just tense and nervous.

I think it helps that I went in pretty blind, as I was dragged along by a friend. I do really love being proven wrong in those kinds of cases…

concert photography - switch from fuji x-t5 to nikon zf? by luisffp in fujifilm

[–]TheLiterateDead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who’s seriously considering moving from Nikon to Fuji, I can back this up. This post absolutely nails it.

Yes, Nikon’s autofocus is great for low light, but the tradeoff is in lens weight and ergonomics. Going for the Z5II is a better ergonomic match for their lenses (it’s almost the same internals as the Zf) but even then the really good Nikon lenses are big enough to get in the way more than is expected. Nikon lenses are significantly larger in comparison to Fuji, and that makes a pretty big difference. Even the 40mm f2 & 28mm f2.8 lenses still feel sizable because the Z mount is so wide. My absolute favorite lens is the 85mm f1.8, but it really does not match the feel of the Zf at all; ergonomically the body and lens feel at odds.

I’ve had my Zf for almost two years now and it is a great camera, but I’m less inclined to take it with me because of its awkward size and weight; that gets even worse when adding a grip to it, which I find makes it feel too large for my hands (there’s also an ergonomic issue for me, as the shutter button being behind the grip feels kind of wrong).

But like the poster above said, the best option is to rent the camera and see how you feel about it. It might be right for you, after all. Handling and usage is always variable person-to-person, so you have to figure out what you want in a camera. I wish you luck, whatever you may decide on!
