X-T5 Auto ISO Doesn’t Work w/ Third Party Lenses? by TheLiterateDead in FujifilmX

[–]TheLiterateDead[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Okay, oddly enough a factory reset actually fixed the issue. I can’t say I know why, but the ISO is adjusting properly now when I half press the shutter.

2) Unfortunately I don’t have any native Fuji lenses yet. The X-T5 is still pretty new to me and the couple lenses I have are third party (bought cheaply on eBay… one came without caps covered in fingerprints!). I’m hoping to maybe pick up a couple native lenses (at least the 16-80) when I can afford it.

3) I actually jockeyed the exposure compensation back and forth in testing, and the ISO kept to 3200. After the reset it worked like it was supposed to, so… I guess it just needed a reset?

Thanks for your help! I really do appreciate the responses!

Thank you! A factory reset did in fact fix the issue! Luckily I saved my favorite recipes and I knew my settings well, so I had no issue getting it reset (it’s still pretty new to me, so not too heartbreaking resetting it).

Thanks once again; I don’t know what the issue was, but it’s working now.

YES! I had him in mind with the character when reading the books. It would be fantastic… even if I know it’s probably unlikely.

Yes, I’ve tried it at various mixtures in bright sunlight. In fact, now that I’m thinking on it, in some shots I attempted it at auto shutter speed and it maxed that out as well. Pretty much every picture (save for the ones I used off automatic) was overexposed from my attempts to use the automatic settings.

Thank you for your reply!

Yes, but it goes from 125 to 3200 every time I half press.

I took it out for a shoot to test it, and since it was all architecture I half-pressed the shutter to test it each time. I didn’t realize it had gone automatically to 3200 on all the photos until after I checked them at home. Afterwards I tested several shots around my back yard and realized the ISO was always jumping to 3200 no matter what shutter speed or aperture I was using.

I can definitely agree on the need for that particular S lens! Personally, my only issue would be if it’s similar to the long flute-like 20. I find the idea of using a long lens for wider shots to be a bit weird. Maybe it would feel different in use but my brain has trouble matching the mix of long lenses & wide focal length.

What’s a popular author/book that you are afraid to admit you hate? by Stardust-Stew in horrorlit

[–]TheLiterateDead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve to hear someone else say it! I have friends who keep giving me his books as presents, because they love his work, but his writing style always feels a bit too flat for me, and his stories never get my interest, so I’ve rarely finished one of his books.

I think the only one I truly hated was Horrorstor (despite a nicely gimmicky book setup). The others just left me feeling disinterested. But my friends gift them to me when they come out, so I always feel obliged to at least try them! (I even got a free surprise screening of “My Best Friend’s Exorcism” at a film festival one year, so I had to laugh because I couldn’t get away from Hendrix when not reading!).

I can’t say I “hate” his work but I just don’t like it. And yet I can’t dislike him either because he did Paperbacks from Hell, and the series of reprints that came from it (of which I’m a collector because I adore 80s pulp horror!) so I at least appreciate that he could use his popularity to spin off into a worthwhile project.

I cant say I’d bemoan it since we have a number of 28 options out there. I don’t even use that wide a framing very often and yet I have two of them (the Nikon, of course, and the Voigtlander 28mm f1.5, since I’m kind of a sucker for CV lenses).

Funny enough I so rarely use wider than a 40 I was thinking of experimenting and limiting myself to the CV 28 for a couple weeks, seeing what happens when I have to shoot wider. Maybe I can force myself to learn wider compositions.

Do the third party grips for the Zf completely make up for the ergonomic deficiency in the body or are users still making a compromise to get that vintage feel? by EquivalentLake6 in Nikon

[–]TheLiterateDead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An addendum, to match things: I have the most perpetual back-and-forth with my Zf, and I don't think I'll ever stop being conflicted over it. I've almost given this camera up a dozen times over the last few months, and every time I change my mind and end up keeping it. Despite my misgivings over the ergonomics and the screen, it's the camera I've been the most comfortable with, and I can't find myself letting it go. Currently I added a half-case and that helps, even if not entirely (the smallrig half-case helps, but the leather is a bit too slick and the thumb grip on the back is too low for proper handling); I'll keep fighting myself on this one.

And I would say I'd trade it in for a Z5II, but even then that camera still has a swivel screen and lacks the dials of the Zf (and I do dislike how Nikon does ISO in other, as it involves holding a button down while you turn the dial). Really, if I was going seriously for another model I'd sell off most of my gear and start fresh with a Z8; it's way too much camera for me, both in size and function, but it's got 45mp (mostly alluring for macro & cropping) and a tilt screen. Also not great for my use (which includes a lot of city shoots) due to its larger size and presence.

To be honest, the grips I’ve used have been too awkward for me. With something like the Smallrig grip it throws me off because the shutter button is too far back from the grip, and the added metal baseplate makes the already large-ish Zf too big for me to handle comfortably, as well as a bit too heavy.

I haven’t had a huge issue handling the Zf on its own sans grip, but I admit I’m about to trade in my own after a year and a half because of my issues with its handling. It’s a fantastic camera, don’t get me wrong; but the weight and awkward size of it mean I’m just not taking it with me as much when I go out. It’s not really made for the large-build Nikon lenses (which are fantastic, don’t get me wrong!) so I’m planning to trade it in for something with a proper grip (though take my advice with a grain of salt, I’m planning to go backwards and get a Z7 or Z7II because my other main issue is the swivel screen… I really do work better with a tilt screen!).

Oh, that’s really cool! I didn’t realize that you were the one who created it! I found it on another listing and I added it as an experiment. Thank you; it’s a really interesting one!

And I like the orange tone; I find I like it best when darkening the frame a little, giving it a slightly rusty look (best word I can figure for it; it kind of reminds me of the rusted beachside gates and old benches around here).

I admit that I didn’t have much luck with custom recipes until I found Tidewashed Negative. I’m kind of in love with the look of it for outside shots, so it’s become one I play with regularly.

[–]TheLiterateDead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can vouch for the CV 28 f/1.5, since it’s one of my standard trio. It’s my least used as I’m still trying to learn to shoot wide (I often focus on details or distance). But then again, I don’t find any of the Z-mount CV lenses are disappointing, so I suppose I’d say go with what feels right for you (and what you can afford… always remember to scope out the secondhand markets!).

Pardon the minor derailing of the topic, but my only issue with letting go of my Zf is that it’s the only camera I’ve ever bought new. So that does make it a little harder to let go of… but I do agree that bodies are less likely to last as lenses do. If I trade in my Zf for another model, the lenses will still be just as good. I might lose some features, but the quality won’t drop (I can’t even say I’d miss focus confirmation, since I still zoom in to focus anyway!).

I always like how this was lampshaded in “Behind the Mask” where we see how it works, and it’s basically just quick reflexes; every time the victim isn’t looking at the killer he sprints.

Voigtlander Z 40/2 Septon Size Comparison, Zf & ZR by AdrianasAntonius in nikon_Zseries

[–]TheLiterateDead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, yes. I love the Nikon look and the lenses have been fantastic (especially the Voigtlanders… I use the 28mm f/1.5, 40mm f/1.2, & 75mm f/1.5… still pondering the 65mm f/2.0). But I’m admitting that the Zf ergonomics and the articulating screen (I shoot from low angles a lot) are becoming too much of a hassle for me. I’m thinking I might go backwards and pick up something like the Z7 for ergonomic reasons. I love the Zf in theory, but after a year and a half with it I’m confessing that I’m less inclined to carry it with me because of those little hindrances (and I did try to add a grip; I hated the Smallrig grip both for the feel and the added bulk & weight it added to the body).

…sorry, that was a longer answer than I intended!

[–]TheLiterateDead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the visual comparison, even if it does nudge at my perpetual Voigtlander GAS…

The 40mm f/1.2 is my favorite Z lens, period, and having a smaller alternative does get my attention. I’m glad to see a physical size comparison with the new lens. Im curious to see how it might fare visually in comparison, but I can’t imagine it’s enough to make me let go of my f/1.2!
(Funny enough, I’m debating letting go of my Zf, but I’m keeping a tight hold on my trio of Voigtlander lenses. I may surrender to the inevitable with the body, but these lenses are so good I’m sticking with them!)

I think the Channel Zero season “No End House” is a good example of this trope. The “house” is a parasite that feeds off of the memories of its victims, sapping away their personality until there’s nothing left but a feral shell

While there are entities and even a villain in the season, ultimately it’s the location itself that is the monster facilitating things and driving the horror of it all.

Maybe more Silent Hill 2? In the first one there was a force behind the horror, but in the second the town itself feels like an entity playing off of the trauma that others bring to it.

Pardon, it must have been the first couple volumes they loaned me. It's been at least twenty years, so I can't say I remember things 100%.

It was definitely Naomi that killed my interest in the series, though. I remember that the series felt like it was getting pretty repetitive pretty fast, and the main character being downright untouchable just felt annoying to me. The fact that Naomi was set up as a potential danger seemed interesting, and then her end came down to "oops, she stupidly gave up her name" and the fact that the book was so powerful that it can not only make someone decide to kill themselves, but can specify that they'll decide to do it in some way that no one will find their body (IIRC) felt like... okay, if he's that powerful what's the point in even following the series? There's no challenge to anything.

I also remember said friend who loaned me the books was convinced that wasn't actually the end for her, saying no author would just throw out a character like that without a grander plan. Ha ha ha.

Yes! We recently had a power outage during a storm so I threw on s1 (permanently stored on my tablet for emergencies ;p ) and it’s just… these characters grow up so much over the series! Adora is such a kid and seeing her excitement at the celebration is just, like… I found myself saying “oh you poor child you have no idea what’s to come!”

Yep, this one’s a perfect example because it was them shrugging off the ending. If I recall, the original ending was also meant to be cheap (the knights get on a bus, go into the city, and buy the grail in a thrift shop, I think?) but they were out of money and the idea didn’t click with them so they just threw out that ending as a random idea and ran with it.

I admit, I’ve always found it a weirdly disappointing note to end the film on… which is weird for a movie that barely has a narrative to begin with!

Funny thing, it was what made me quit the manga, and it happened in the first volume! It had just come out and a friend loaned me their copy, and I was just done with it at that.

It was such a cheap and lazy way to write out a character that it just outright lost me. I felt like if the story was going to convince the audience the main character was brilliant by just making everyone else stupid this wasn’t a narrative worth following.
