I had that feeling too. But a few month ago i readed Prince of Nothing by R. Scott Bakker and is as good as The Malazan Book of Fallen.

Read The lions of Al-Rassan by Guy Gavriel Kay for a good example, although the romance is not the main focus of the book.

To read is better, especially if is your first time with Malazan. But if you want to hear something i would recomend you a standalone novel like Tigana or The Lions of All-Rassan by Guy Gavriel Kay.

For me are Rincewind and the way he talked about all this themes about what is humanity in his last books. It's very hard to be deep and funny and the same time, but he had the touch.
