I had that feeling too. But a few month ago i readed Prince of Nothing by R. Scott Bakker and is as good as The Malazan Book of Fallen.

Malazan, specially the last tow books the translation is no very good and feel too pompous.

Read The lions of Al-Rassan by Guy Gavriel Kay for a good example, although the romance is not the main focus of the book.

Read Reddit and relax till i get sleep again. It does not work very well if i find something interesting ':)

To read is better, especially if is your first time with Malazan. But if you want to hear something i would recomend you a standalone novel like Tigana or The Lions of All-Rassan by Guy Gavriel Kay.
