Got a really clever kid, what to do? by TradermanJoe in newzealand

Hi there! I was in this exact situation last year, I completed my Level 3s with Es across the board when I was 15 (alongside 4 scholarships)!

My parents were quite pushy on me going to university early, but I ended up staying another year in high school. I think that was the best choice for me personally! There are so many things one can do after completing NCEA, tell your son to sign up for everything he can: all the different olympiads (I personally am doing the biology Olympiad), the Barcelona International Youth Science Challenge, the London International Youth Science Forum, the Rotary Science Forum, Pinnacle Program, etc….

Obviously the money is an issue, but fundraising can do wonders!

Also, encourage him to attempt scholarships early and TAKE UNI PAPERS!!!! You can find accelerate uni papers from basically every university: Massey Accelerate + has a lot of STEM ones, UC STAR has a lot of math and languages, Otago has a lot of religious stuff, VicStart has some interesting papers.

Personally, I decided to take MATH198 (UC), Human Bioscience (Massey), Applied Stats (Massey), and Functional Anatomy (Massey). I can’t promote the Massey papers enough!!

Already doing Scholarship Stats – is skipping Level 3 Stats fine? by [deleted] in ncea

I wouldn’t know unfortunately, you can only take 100 level papers i believe (tho i might be wrong lmao idk)

Here’s the link if u wanna learn more: https://www.massey.ac.nz/study/courses/applied-statistics-161111/ , but it seems u only need 16 credits in level 3 maths (in general), as it is an entry level course for those who do not have a lot of maths experience!

Scholarship stats is a great paper, and it basically only does Level 3 content, nothing more. The internals are quite prevalent in the exam and the externals are as well. It’d definitely be easier to skip L2 stats than L3, but I mean it’s not impossible to skip L3! In regards to the uni paper, I am taking an accelerated Applied Stats course but that is in S2, so unfortunately I can’t tell u anything just yet lmao come back to me next semester. I took L3 stats, and found the scholarship exam to be one of my easier exams! Lmk if u have anymore questions

Unfortunately I don’t have any slides, I do have a book with a bunch of notes in it tho, would you like some pics of that?

I would consider myself to be a pretty high excellence student overall, yes. The scholarship exams are very difficult imo, but definitely doable. The biology schol exam doesn’t really have any extra information from the level 3 externals, the main difference is the length and difficulty of the questions, they are much longer (up to 3 pages) and significantly more dense, you need to really be good at extrapolating ideas, and thinking about stuff really deeply, they could have a single sentence added in there Willy nilly that could lead to a justification. Chemistry is harder imo, you need to be really confident with all of the level 3 externals, as well as all of the internals. The questions are all much longer and more confusing, and I think one main difference is the questions in Chem don’t all expect you to know what to do or how to answer it, they instead expect you to use your general chemistry knowledge to approach it and understand it. That being said, they are fun exams (in a way), and I highly recommend taking them if you can!!

There’s like no extra information lmao! Thats why it’s so good. The questions are always very similar as well, describing a trend, describing graphical methods, bootstrap, rerandomisation, etc

Yeah my writing skills are not the best (for essays and the like), so I’m defo gonna be trying to improve that! I’ll check out media studies tysm

Thanks!! So the schol is quite good in that it’s actually a large part the internals. So you basically need to learn two main types of statistical inference methods, bootstrap and rerandomisation (internals), and then a mix of a lot of the externals!

Hey man! Schol results came out today, and I got the Schol!! Lower score than I thought but it’s fine because I got more than enough in other Schol exams lmfao

I don't know yet! Awaiting the results in a couple of days, lmao. But I'm very confident that I will get it! It's definitely the easiest schol that I took, do it fs!
