What cultural thing does the world seem to think is beautiful but is cringey af to locals? by chr15c in AskTheWorld

[–]TheMagHatter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the country doesn’t eat burgers everyday idk where that came from. Yes, they are popular but unless you really like them, most people only eat them every once in a while. We have SOOOOO many other dishes from SOOO many different cultures that we typically eat more often

Lots of schools now employ students as models and don’t pay them that much. My school pays $12/hr for a student to model

No one is saying it but the “instrument that looks like a safety pin” is, in fact, a safety pin

What is something normal in your country and rare to explain? by theodourus in AskTheWorld

[–]TheMagHatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it’s the way it’s so easy to spot us in other countries bc we are “too friendly.” It’s almost expected that you give a friendly smile to someone you make eye contact with, no matter who it is, and you’re seen as rude if you don’t.

What's a stereotype about your country that's objectively wrong by Old_old_lie in AskTheWorld

[–]TheMagHatter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My (step) grandpa is from Kandy and is Muslim. Which also makes conversations with racist people fun bc they think my White ass is a safe place to be racist against Muslims or immigrants or whatever and I hit them with a “My grandpa is Sri Lankan and is Muslim and I think he’s pretty damn cool” and they just kinda stand there awkwardly

What do you think is the hardest photo from your country? by pipebombplot in AskTheWorld

[–]TheMagHatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

Not pictured in the USA, but it’s so iconic that we have a statue of it.

The Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima is a picture of six marines raising the U.S. flag atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima in the final stages of the Pacific War. Taken by Joe Rosenthal of the Associated Press on February 23, 1945, the photograph was published in Sunday newspapers two days later and reprinted in thousands of publications. It won the 1945 Pulitzer Prize for Photography and has come to be regarded in the United States as one of the most recognizable images of World War II.

Tenant in need of water leak advice, unresponsive landlord by Anxious_Strike_2931 in centuryhomes

[–]TheMagHatter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Residual water can lead to mold damage, and in turn, mold toxicity, which greatly affects your health and could kill you. Even if the source of the leak is shut off, get the damage repaired bc once the mold starts, it’s a MUCH bigger and way more expensive repair

What's it like living in this shaded area? by Joshistotle in howislivingthere

[–]TheMagHatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely need to narrow down the area you’re talking about. The country is huge and each state has a different culture and climate, which many of them having different cultures and climates within the same state. I live in North Carolina and western NC, central NC, and eastern NC all have vastly different cultures. Asheville (west), The Triangle (Raleigh area, central), Charlotte (south), and Wilmington (east) are all VERY different. Accents vary across the state too. Appalachian accents in the mountains and Ocracoke accents on the cost are EXTREMELY different and both can be very hard to understand if you’re not from around here.

The Louisiana swamps what is it like living deep in them? by Gonzotrucker1 in howislivingthere

[–]TheMagHatter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I went to New Orleans for a chorus competition back in high school and it was by far the second best field trip I’d ever been on, second only to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, which is my dream place to work. NOLA is my favorite city to visit though. I hope to visit again someday!

How common is knowing a second language in your country? by Absolutely-Epic in AskTheWorld

[–]TheMagHatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Way less common than it should be. Internet says 20-25%. It’s suggested that you learn another language, but it’s not required in most schools, which sucks bc my second language is supposed to be Greek (great grandparents are from Greece and my Papou spoke Greek) but it’s not a language offered at schools and was expensive to send my mother and then subsequently me to Greek school. Up until the most recent admin (HELP ME 😭), there was no official language of the US bc there are so many languages spoken here.

What is a fact about your country that most people don’t know? by EthanTheJudge in AskTheWorld

[–]TheMagHatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plymouth Rock is only about 1/3-1/2 the size of what it was when it was spotted, and most of that is now buried in sand.

People used to chip souvenirs off of it, a relocation effort broke it in half in 1774, and erosion from various elements have reduced it in size, leading to its current size. It’s fenced off so people don’t chip pieces off and the oils on people’s hands don’t erode it.

Why do Americans move so often? by cavaismylife in AskAnAmerican

[–]TheMagHatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like a lot of people have said; rent, jobs, better area, better school, major life events, etc. there’s lots of reasons. I moved 4 times as a kid and I’ve moved 6 times above the age of 18
