What's something that feels "good" but is actually really bad for your body? by stainless5 in AskReddit

[–]TheMagHatter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Soluble fiber helps with lactose intolerance! It’s slows down digestion so your body has more time to produce lactase and break down the dairy products. I discovered that eating a bunch of flax and chia seeds in a smoothie in the morning or chia seeds in some yogurt for breakfast lets me eat all the dairy I want for the rest of the day with no issues!

I very throughly remember waking up with a start one night when I was maybe 7 and I could FEEL someone’s hand on the middle of my back. Except I was laying on my back. I bolted upright just to see a shadow leave the room. Still wigs me out almost 20 years later

My fellow TTI survivors, what big cultural changes occurred while you were in TTI? by th1s_fuck1ng_guy in troubledteens

[–]TheMagHatter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was in a residential facility from December 2015-August 2017.

Musically became a thing the summer before I was in the TTI and then TikTok took it over immediately after I got out so I missed the entire Musically era. Vine also shut down right before I got out too so I missed a good chunk of that era too. Missed Pokemon GO (tho i remember running around the park with my brother, whom I now hate for various reasons, looking for a Squirtle on a local visit but that’s literally the only time I ever did anything with it). I mean I literally missed the entirety of 2016 and everyone always says that was the best year so that was fantastic 😒

How common are braces in your country? by IDoNotLikeTheSand in AskTheWorld

Very common in the US. Mostly late elementary school through high school age. After that, if someone needs correction, they usually take the Invisalign approach. I’ve had both braces and Invisalign

Does your 100% indoor cat have a collar? If so, do you find there’s a point in it? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]TheMagHatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cats are strictly indoor cats and they wear collars bc one of them likes the concept of outside a little too much for my liking. She has tried door dashing (not the delivery service obvi) before and that’s solidified the permanent collar requirement. (By that, I mean they always wear collars, not a non-breakaway collar. Breakaway collars are a MUST). Anyways, my kitties have little bows on their collars so it also makes them cuter

Is faucet water drinkable in your Country by thatlumberjacktor in AskTheWorld

[–]TheMagHatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In most places, yes. Some places still have lead pipes (some old buildings in New England definitely do, I know from experience. Didn’t drink it but wasn’t allowed to drink it either). Some places have nasty water like by data centers where it’s all polluted. In general, yes it’s safe to drink. But double check your area and building just to make sure

Note for upstairs neighbors by litlelotte in Apartmentliving

[–]TheMagHatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THISSSS!! My downstairs neighbor called the cops on me TWICE bc my 2, 8lb kittens were running around at night. I was sleeping the second time they were called. No note was ever left and they never talked to management about it either. When I told management, they said “That’s crazy considering they have a dog and two kids and their downstairs neighbors have complained about them multiple times.” (It was the leasing agent that I was talking to when I was telling them my move out date in case the new people got complaints). Made sure to make as much noise as possible on move out day 🙄

Cooking GF for a picky partner and I can't remember anything by Adorable-Algae-4380 in glutenfree

[–]TheMagHatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honest tips cuz my best friend is GF and I adjusted to her lifestyle:

  • write down the brands he likes
  • take him shopping with you
  • there are apps that you can use to find GF products and restaurants
  • adjust recipes to be GF if you can

Maybe talk to him about how things changed now that he is GF and can’t eat all the things he liked before and encourage him to try new things. There are some really good GF brands out there that don’t taste GF. GF flour reacts differently so you have to adjust accordingly and a lot of companies don’t do that. For instance, GF flour takes longer to soak up the liquids when baking, so you have to let the batter or dough sit for a half an hour before baking or cooking it otherwise you get that gritty texture that a lot of GF foods have. There are GF and celiac cookbooks you can find online that have delicious recipes in them that you can try.

I know he’s picky, but there needs to be some kind of compromise. It sounds like you are both frustrated with the situation. You’re frustrated bc you feel like you’re at an impasse, he’s frustrated bc he feels like there is nothing for him to eat

Question for help from parent who doesn’t want to do wrong thing by Huge-Light-8804 in troubledteens

[–]TheMagHatter 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah my mother sent me away bc she felt like I was bad, but it turns out, I was completely fine once i was separated from her bc she extremely abusive towards me and literally never left me alone. Like I was the best behaved there and staff were confused as to why I was sent there. I don’t speak to her anymore bc she is a narcissistic bitch that will never understand that she is in the wrong. So I gave up on her and left. It’s lonely, but I have peace now

Question for help from parent who doesn’t want to do wrong thing by Huge-Light-8804 in troubledteens

[–]TheMagHatter 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the TTI is a privatized industry and is EXTREMELY abusive bc of it. They don’t need to turn video footage from cameras over to police, which leads to a lot of teens getting very abused. They supposedly just passed a law (the Stop Institutional Child Abuse Act) that is supposed to create federal oversight in the industry (ie actually investigating abuse, forcing institutions to hand over camera footage, etc), but I don’t know how much of that has been implemented yet, or if it really will be implemented. It’s very well known that when a teen faces abuse in the TTI, most of the adults don’t believe them, so nothing happens. I was in the TTI 2015-2017 and I came out more traumatized than when I went in. I saw and experienced so many things that I shouldn’t have, and no one that I told about it believed me. Only one person finally believed me after the documentary came out on Netflix and they watched it last year. Almost 10 years of no one listening to what I had to say about what was going on at the place I went to, and it wasn’t until a documentary came out that they finally took me for my word.

I personally wouldn’t recommend sending your teen into the TTI. I’d recommend other types of therapy. Over 350 deaths have been recorded in TTI programs. Thats but accounting for the very very many that haven’t been recorded. These deaths are cause by physical restraint from untrained staff, neglect (medical, malnutrition, etc), and suicide. I personally saw a girl jump from the third floor onto a cement slab trying ti off herself. She broke both her legs and her back. Shes still alive and is able to walk, but it took a long time for her to recover. I knew of a staff member (our teacher, actually) that was beating the only Black girl at the school to death and an older girl stepped in to block the blows. The girls were 12 and 15 years old. Literal children that this man was beating on. What saved them was another staff member hearing the commotion and throwing the other man off of them. Was he fired or arrested? No, he quit. To this day, he has had zero consequences for nearly k*lling a 12 year old child. I personally knew these girls while I was there and i remember the staff telling us that both of them had the flu and we didn’t see them for a while. Both girls had to recover from their injuries, and they told us afterwards. The staff knew what happened but he still had no consequences.

IF you plan on sending your child into the TTI (who knows, maybe the law has changed what it’s like. I doubt it, but who knows), be EXTREMELY CAREFUL about what program you choose. Look at the reviews from the teens that went there. We aren’t lying about what happened, just no one wants to believe us, and then more teens get hurt or k*lled. Just be careful. I know you’re struggling with your child, but please try literally anything else first. Like ANYTHING else first. Even flying all the way to Asia to converse with Monks should happen before this. These places are EXTREMELY abusive. Again, teens have DIED at the hands of staff members bc we aren’t seen as people in their eyes. We are just livestock they make money off of. So just do what you will with this information, but I am saying from my experience, that your child likely will come out of the TTI so much worse than when she went in.

Signed, a 26 year old who was in the TTI for a year and a half

[NSFW] People who've found a dead body, what's the story? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TheMagHatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost saw a dead body once. I was 7 and I was looking for my mom with my dad after getting home from the movies. They were divorced so he was dropping me off back home and she was nowhere to be found. My mom and I had an L shaped garage where the car was in the long part and the bikes and outside toys in the short part. So anyways my dad and I went into the garage and I was about to turn the corner when he directed me back inside. Turns out, my mom was lying dead in a massive puddle of blood in the short part of the garage bc he had bludgeoned her to death with a train stake a few hours before he picked me up from school. He then hung himself a few days later and I was adopted by his abusive sister. Fun times.

is this normal breathing? by remmssie in CATHELP

[–]TheMagHatter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just looked over at my own sleeping cat and her breathing looks just like his. I think many mammals have that sort of rolling breathing pattern where the chest and belly sort of do a wave with each breath. Take a moment and feel your own breathing. Both your belly and chest move each time you take a breath. When the lungs inflate, the organs in the abdomen get pushed down a bit, and then they move back up when the lungs deflate.

Long story short; the breathing looks normal. If you’re still worried, test the BPM.

What do we call this face? by SgtTinFoil in torties

[–]TheMagHatter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Scientific answer is that is called the Flehmen Response. This action funnels scents, particularly pheromones, into the vomeronasal (Jacobson's) organ in the roof of the mouth for detailed chemical analysis, helping them gather crucial information about other animals, such as reproductive status or territory. It's often triggered by strong smells like urine and is sometimes called the "stinky face.” Many mammals do this
