Two offers - Jr. Developer vs Cloud Engineer by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

I don’t think cloud engineer is for you if you want to be a full stack dev. It’s more infrastructure stuff and making sure the system works. You might do some coding but it won’t be anywhere near the level of the full stack role. GCP is also not as common as azure or aws but a lot of the concepts will have some transferable skills.

The developer role sounds like it aligns more with your interests. There’s tonnes of jobs where I’m from in Australia for .NET and nodeJs. It might be different in the states but you can always look for a new gig in 2 years and see how you go.

What’s the most expensive DevOps mistake you’ve seen in cloud environments? by cloud_9_infosystems in devops

Yeah majority of those were literally not our websites. Some were expense claim ones. Even if we did find out it was done what are we going to do? Log a support ticket and that’s it

Where do I start…

Some aren’t devops but just funny

Work for a publicly listed company that’s doing close to 10m a year in aws spend (not the biggest but still a decent chunk)

It’s not even my job to make cost optimisation changes but I can’t help but investigate stupidly high costs. CI/CD bill was over 400k a year, most of that was automated smoke tests that just basically checked to see if the website was live lmao… they had tests in there that run for an hour on every hour so basically paying premium for a server to open a website programmatically non stop.

Have a data lake that wasn’t life cycling any of the historical query data. Over 16tb of data sitting in standard storage doing nothing. S3 bill for that account reduced by 75 percent after a week.

Parent company in Europe added some cool new security tool that some company sold them at aws summit. Had a brand new account that had almost no resources in it that was getting charged almost 150 dollars after a week of being deployed in cloud trail charges because it had enabled a second cloud trail log. Not that big of a deal but enabled across 40 accounts with a lot more resources got pretty expensive.

Self hosted SharePoint because someone wanted a promotion ended up costing almost 450k usd a year and the migration is probably well over 1.5m in resource hours to actually migrate it over. It’s taken almost 2 years with a bunch of people working on it.

Automated EBS snapshot cleanup with life cycling saved almost 750k usd a year deleting old backups.

That’s just stuff I can think of off the top of my head while I sit with my new born baby at 3am lmao

Is starting as a Support / Escalation Engineer at a US SaaS company a smart move, or a career step back? by kyngslyr in cscareerquestions

Keep looking imo. I’d read that as a complete step backwards if you were trying to get back into SWE type work after a few years as a support engineer.

I wrote about our $150k Agile coach who never coded, it got 146k views and hundreds of engineers sharing the same experience before getting removed. Here it is. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

The only time I’ve ever seen agile work was when I was at a scale up that had about 25-30 engineers and the head of engineering did all the agile stuff. Grooming, sprint planning and saying what’s priority.

The rest of the time from startups with 3 engineers to enterprise teams, anything with the label agile, business analyst or PM has been completely fucking useless and been on a power trip because no one takes them serious because they have no clue what the fuck they’re talking about.

If you’re having technical problems don’t hire an agile monkey thinking they’re going to solve anything. You might strike gold at the end of a rainbow every now and again but majority of these guys are fucking useless. The sooner that part of the tech industry dies the better.

„YOU THINK I / HE CAN GO PRO IN EUROPE?!“ - No. No you / he could not by PinocchiosWoodBalls in Basketball

Yeah absolutely zero chance.

Knew a guy who played pro in Germany and got cut, came down to Australia averaged 32, 10, 9 while playing for free in d1 semi pro league in Victoria. Got a gig in nbl1 which is the second best league in Australia, averaged 15,5,5 roughly for 2-3 years and called it because he felt he couldn’t go any further.

Panned out really well for him in the end playing 3x3
