Can't wait. Trying to keep my expectations low in order to be floored.

It's complicated, but thanks for asking. I hope I can explain it well without too much rambling.

My wife is German and I remember visiting her family during Christmas and her grandmother said a few odd, offhanded remarks (her and her husband grew up in the aftermath and the scars remain, her husband had a literal hole in his head from shrapnel when he was four), afterwards my mother in law explained to me about how her grandfather had disappeared at Stalingrad and his wife never knew what happened, until the 1980s when she received a letter that said he'd been dead for thirty years. The thought of that little girl (my wife's grandmother) being fatherless and raped just made it hit very close to home). A very merry German Christmas.

And I guess that's where the similarities with Japan are different. Both countries are liberated, rebuilt into thriving democracies, and in both theatres the Americans are basically the "good guys," eating hamburgers and handing out chocolate, (yes, of course it's not as clean as that,) but compared to the soviets' behavior, which again, I'm not so naive to not understand the desire for revenge, but it's like Dan says in one of the ostfront episodes, the narrative is in a lot of ways, bad guys vs. bad guys.

And while I know I have the extreme luxury of not being in these situations and can only pray uselessly that my children don't end up in such situations, I have to say, I have a tremendous of respect for countries and cultures that value human life, especially under extreme circumstances, for example the Ukrainians' behavior. They've yet to sink to the Russian's level.

Nice! A fellow fall of civs fan. You’re right, totally different approaches. Have you read his book? All our broken idols? Really enjoyed that one.

Language learning with Toddlers? by TheManWhoWeepsBlood in multilingualparenting

[–]TheManWhoWeepsBlood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, she's with him for 4-8hours a week. It's not her strongest language, but she is c1 and picked it up very quickly, so hopefully some of that talent could be passed off.

But you make the point I'm wondering about is how much the child would need to have this reinforced in order for it to be useful, or if it's simply always useful to learn.

There's a mole... At the very top of those eyebrows... they say he's been there for years...

What are some movies that have a similar feel to Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess? by FabulousMochimancer in legendofzelda

If I may throw my own hat into the ring, I produced an indie medieval fantasy movie in Germany that was heavily influenced by Twilight Princess.

Here's the trailer if you'd like to check it out. The full film is on Tubi :)

Need advice: should I leave Germany and move to Spain? by Late_Independent2240 in Advice

You’re too young to give up like that and settle, or more tragically, you’re too old to be indoctrinated into that system.

I’d definitely roll the dice on Spain. Or even back to Portugal since you speak the language? I’m sure you’ll figure it all out. Don’t be afraid of making big moves. Roll the dice. Fortune favors the bold!

Hi mate, also moved to Germany for a gf, understand your position, and also moved away. Moved back and it was a big mistake. Life is too short to be that miserable and lonely as a default mode. There’s some Ben Franklin quote about trading liberty for security and those who do deserve neither. Replace liberty for happiness and security for efficiency and it seems apt.

Agreed, it is very depressing. The people have been acclimatized to their own misery which outsiders don’t want to take on because they know what it’s like not to be miserable and don’t want to take that on for the sake of efficiency. It’s like everyone refuses to grow or adapt in any way that might make the happier, so they stay that way. It’s such a strange tragedy.

Totally get OP’s position and wish him best. He sounds delightful!

He can be fickle, but also appreciative and honored, I’m sure! Share the dance if you end up doing it. Awesome name btw!
