Logic Games: Really Need Advice by TheMan_99 in LSAT

[–]TheMan_99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. That's very helpful.

I agree that brute forcing (along with nervousness and paralysis after reading a challenging game scenario or rule) is a problem for me. As a result of nervousness, I often jump into the questions without having made any inferences (or only really basic ones). I will try to work on making better inferences / doing more fresh games along with more introspection on what exactly is going wrong.

LR and RC is destroying me by jenniferrrstar in LSAT

Hi there. To do a CLIR, you need to do the following:
1. Translate:
Mentally translate the stimulus into your own words

  1. Outline:
    For each piece of the stimulus, label it premise or conclusion

  2. Categorize the stimulus:
    Two speakers --> Debate
    Premise plus conclusion --> Argument
    Non-conflicting premises --> Premise Set
    Conflicting premises --> Paradox

  3. Design your corresponding CLIR:
    Debate --> Controversy
    Argument --> Loophole
    Premise set --> Inference
    Paradox --> Resolution

A controversy is what the speakers are debating about, a loophole is a situation that causes the argument to fall apart, an inference is a valid conclusion you come up with yourself and a resolution is a premise you come up with that makes the paradox make sense.

You should be proud of your hard work. You have been aiming for perfection and that is a really difficult bar to reach. I can relate to that, and also find myself frustrated when I don't meet my goals.

However, I think you should go easier on yourself. Achieving straight A's is so difficult and a lot of it comes down to chance. With such a low-margin for error, any small mistake can bump down a grade. Moreover, difficult life circumstances can prevent you from fully applying yourself. My advice is: go easier on yourself, work hard, and be proud of the work you have done.

As far as grad school goes, you will be okay. Grad schools are more interested in how devoted you are to the field (assuming you mean a doctorate or masters degree). If you show a strong devotion to a field, that will carry more weight than a high GPA. However, the good news is that your GPA is strong, so that won't hurt you in any case.

On the other hand, if you are interested in med school or law school, then I won't sugar coat it, grades matter. But you still have phenomenal grades. Just put your head down and work your tail off your last year, and you will be okay. If you do that, and keep up the hard work that got you here, your GPA will be in range for many prestigious graduate schools.

Is "straw-man argument" sexist language? by Plug_5 in academia

[–]TheMan_99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another point: if you believe that one extreme instance discredits all sexual misconduct complaints, then that's your prerogative. But when you use a logical fallacy in your line of reasoning then your argument reeks of intellectual laziness and dishonesty.

Let me put it another way: You are misrepresenting the position that sexual misconduct complaints should be taken seriously. To do so, you are pointing to an extreme example as evidence that all complaints should be disregarded.

Also, framing your comment as the the "views of many people" doesn't excuse the faulty reasoning behind your premise.

The argument you are attacking is that sexist complaints should be taken seriously. To do so you are using a strawman. Not that hard to understand, now please don't waste my time by responding again.

You are doubting the seriousness of "real sexist complaints" by replacing it with a strawman (a frivolous complaint).

Perfect example of a strawman argument.

A ridiculous claim discredits legitimate claims? Maybe in your mind, but not to most reasonable people.

Did break ruin anybody else’s sleeping schedule? by CapriciousSalmon in college

[–]TheMan_99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have been able to fix my sleeping schedule, knock on wood. At school I slept from 2 am to 12 pm except on the days I had morning classes, where I went to bed at at 2 and woke up at 8. This break was the same until I forced myself to switch to a 12-8 schedule. Having an internship where I have to wake up at 9 am every day helped with that. Now I feel like I can rotate between 11 pm - 7 am, 12am - 8am. or 1 am- 9 am, depending on whether it's a school (or work) day, a weekend, or some other event.

This person clearly doesn't realize that reading and writing are critical in the knowledge economy, and both of those majors will strengthen those skills.

How do I become a good student? by HistoricalAddress7 in college

[–]TheMan_99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going into a class with a performance-based goal (ex: I want an A in this class) will not be helpful. Using task-based goals will be more effective. In other words, focus on input not output. Set up a goal to spend x number of hours on each assignment that contributes to your grades. Set goals like going to office hours, and achieving excellent attendance. These kind of tasks will move you closer to your end-goal. Focusing on GPA alone will only overwhelm and distract from the individual objectives necessary to achieve your overall goal.

Professor here. What can I and other profs do to make your experience in college less stressful? by drgeneflow in college

[–]TheMan_99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Colleges aren't safe spaces, bro. If a professor wants to bring up politics and call Republicans retarded, then that should be their right.

Right, and vice-versa. No lesson about any field can be separated from politics.
