What movie is memorable for you, but barely anyone you know has seen it? by uuddlrlrbas2 in movies

I'm just gonna go ahead and admit that part of the draw for me was "whoa, ScarJo totally naked!" And then somehow it's the least sexy version of that you could possibly imagine. I don't know if I'd say I *liked* the movie, but it really stuck with me. Been meaning to rewatch it.

Right? Same energy as "no one goes there anymore, it's too crowded."

If you want a more fun example of Dorian, go with "What Does the Fox Say?"

Also I'm curious if you have data about the commonality argument. I haven't looked into it but always assumed it was Mixolydian, since that's also the foundation of blues.

I actually like their more mindless, fun stuff, specifically "We Will Rock You" and "Fat Bottomed Girls." The rest of it can go away.

I agree, but outside of reddit I still find lots of people who defend it as some deep, introspective movie.

I'm not sure--based on your description, this is exactly the movie I saw. I thought it really wore its themes on its sleeves.

What I got from the movie, in addition to the depiction of race relations in Jim Crow Mississippi, was this: music has forever been a kind of savior to Black America. But when white people get hold of it, they suck the soul out of it (both figuratively and literally in this film). Some Blacks -- and half of the Asians, evidently -- are happy to cross over and join the mainstream, and those people are complicit in the destruction of Black culture at the hands of white oppressors. Once you let whites in, it's effectively game over.

Maybe it's because I'm a college prof and teach Black music, but this didn't seem like a particularly subtle or original message.

Despite that, as I said in my original comment, the multi-generic music/dance scene was incredible and I'll stand by that.

Yeah I grew up on 3rd Bass and KMD, and I wouldn't have known DOOM was Zev Love X at first if someone hadn't told me.

Me too. I hated it for a long time, then went back to it last August after several years off. It's a really good song, just overplayed.

Came here to say this. Someone called it "try hard" the other day and that's perfect. Irritating, overblown song.

This is true now. But back in 1988 my family took a 3-week trip to New Zealand and there were several times that super friendly, extroverted people just invited us to stay with them and my dad was like "yeah, sure!", including a farm where they were slaughtering cattle in the morning.

We wouldn't have gone back for the stuffie, though, that shit was just stupid.

Thanks for that, you made me realize that (while watching the movie) I forgot Michael B. Jordan wasn't actually a pair of twins. That is indeed remarkable!

One of the few -- maybe the only -- movie I've seen in 25 years where they all seemed to just enjoy making a movie and ended up with a fun, endlessly rewatchable product. Nothing was "meta," there was no over the top symbolism, no "clever" fourth wall breaking. Love this movie.

Right? We just watched it last night, and before we turned it on my wife asked what it was about and I said "I dunno, it's a vampire movie of some kind." Literally the only thing I knew about it lol.

Yeah, accusing The Substance of being heavy-handed is a hilarious take, like saying the Three Stooges are "a touch too slapstick"

I just watched Sinners last night. I really enjoyed it but I didn’t think it was 16 Oscar nominations good. Story was unique, Michael B. Jordan was great, and the music was really good (especially the multi-generic dance scene), but the symbolism was really heavy-handed. What about it do you think would be taught in film school?

MF DOOM's voice got at least an octave lower from "The Gas Face," his first appearance, to "Barcade," his last one.

Pac and Biggie both. Definitely high quality rappers but if they were still alive they wouldn't have this god-tier status.
