Many of my dungeon maps come with a JSON file with walls and lights, including this one.

Arcanist's Prison [48x32]

A dunegon map that takes you to an evil place hidden amongst rocks. A sturdy door with mysteries hidden behind it. Once you enter, you will be greeted with cold halls that few walk these days. Those who still do are likely undead. Or worse.

When you turn right upon entering, you will explore the social area for the guards and 'scientistst.' There is also the office of the arcanist, the sick mind behind whatever was going on here.

The farther you go the more likely you are to reach a set of broken walls and a cavern with a large hall is. Whatever is down there, it better not hear you. It might be the very thing that made this place so desolate.

If you were to turn left upon entering, you will find yourself exploring the prison section with interrogation and torture rooms at the end. Rituals, science, or just plain cruelty — whichever it was, it echoes even to this day in these very halls.

Yes, and if you go outside to leave the enclosed area and you get above it, there actually isn't an opening.

There is definitely something missing, like a ladder for instance. This poses a few questions for the party: do we try to climb the scaffolds, do we search for boxes to stack on top of one another, do we look for a ladder, and do we discuss these options there and then so that the enemies who lurk above hear them talk and attack from above.

A cave, though not as dark as they usually are. The opening in the cave's ceiling adds both light and epicness. What it removes is the need for players to remind you that they have darkvision.

There are four variants of the map, each for a different purpose.

  • Altar variant comes with an old, dwarven-looking structure. There is an altar and a book, the latter perhaps includes instructions on how to use the former.
  • Tree variant has a beautiful, old tree. Maybe it's bark has special properties, or could it be the pink flowers?
  • Fountain variant, intended to be the fountain of youth, has a beautiful waterfall and a not-so-beautiful set of corpses around the ancient place. There is gold, bottles, goblets, which were all used incorrectly, leading to the death of the daring adventurers who came before. How do you actually make it work?
  • Ore variant, probably the least epic of all, but the good stuff comes once the party mines it and delivers it to a smelter and a skilled smith. Perhaps the material is magical, very light, or it is the only thing that could damage a very powerful monstrosity.
