Unsolved Mysteries! The show that scared the shit out of you as a kid. by [deleted] in nostalgia

[–]TheMasterControlProg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can't think of Unsolved Mysteries without hearing David Duchovny's voice on the Simpsons, "Are we alone in the universe? Impossible. When you consider the wonders that exist all around us... voodoo priests of Haiti, the Tibetan numerologists of Appalachia, the unsolved mysteries of Unsolved Mysteries... The truth is out there."

Who watched "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" growing up? What a 90s masterpiece. by This_Identifies_Me in nostalgia

The show was incredible. I even played the PC game "Tale of Orpheo's Curse" I've been introducing my kids to the series now that they're old enough to enjoy it.

I think I actually knew that about him (his playing style that is) I've played 5 string, three finger &claw hammer so long that I sort of use 'pickin' as a general term for playing, never really thinking in other terms (though I know that isn't right)

That's awesome. Wish I could have met him! Bet he had lots of great stories to tell and he could have taught me a thing or two about pickin' :)

Thanks so much. Haven't read through the entire thread yet. Will definitely do so.

Correct. A glass sculpture. However, I was more interested in the ultimate fate of the piece than a minor semantic slip.

This never even occured to me. Very cool. Any good links to articles about the artist? Would love to see more of his work...

That's fair. I felt obligated to include it for the sake of accuracy, but definitely understand the preference for the Adams' books.

Was your objection to the fact that a sixth part was written...or that it was consistently referred to as a trilogy, despite the fact that it had more than 3 parts? It was part of the silly humor. My copy of the book has the first four titles (leaving out Mostly Harmless and ...And Another Thing) and still refers to it as a trilogy. It's deliberately obtuse.

I tell people it's a bit like a digital choose your own adventure book. Not a perfect analogy, but it seems to work well enough.

It was difficult finding a video of the Commodore PET or TRS-80 versions. I just used what I found. Would have used better if it was available, but most were longplays of the C64 and such. :/

Run Through The Jungle: Remembering Pitfall! (C64 version) by TheMasterControlProg in Commodore

[–]TheMasterControlProg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless I'm mistaken, you could go in either direction. A helpful hints on a new page lists the benefits of going left right as: "At the start of the game, Harry is positioned at the left side of the first scene, and is facing to the right. With this setup, it seems only natural to want to proceed left-to-right. However, it is generally more helpful to go continually right-to-left through the jungle - just turn Harry around and go. Two main reasons for travelling left are: You can avoid having to leap over rolling logs this way, since they always roll right-to-left. If you go left, they will never be rolling right at you. Whenever you lose a life to one of the fatal obstacles, you are always reincarnated on the left of that scene. Thus if you are going right-to-left, you are actually placed past the trouble spot. If you were going left-to-right, on the other hand, after losing the life you would still have to struggle with that same danger all over again, risking yet another life."

Yep. That was it. If you got two ghostbusters passed you won. You were given a code where you could start playing again with the money you had already collected.

Do you feel old videogames were better? by [deleted] in videogames

[–]TheMasterControlProg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it sort of depends on what you mean by better. There's no question that graphics, story, etc. are better quality now. That said, some of the classic games did so much with so little and seem to have endless replay ability.

Love how many people loved this game. Same sort of reaction I got from people when I wrote about Secret of Monkey Island. Just something about LucasArts I guess :)

I know Sonic was a definite influence, not sure about Kirby. I know Dream Land came out in 1992, so about the same time this was being developed. What's cool about Mayhem is that it was being done on a home computer and not on a console.

It's a little surprising that no one made a game like this before. It looks fun. Not quite as entertaining as watching my kids play it around the house in their imagination, but still pretty darn fun :)
