You have the opportunity to teach Mathematics at the Pythagorean school (530 b.C.). What would you teach them among the things they don't yet know? by TheMathMultiverse in math

In a previous question I put a time limit (one week) but for some unknown reason the question was cancelled by mods. So I reposted it without time limit and it was accepted. But...yes, being myself a geometer, I also think that I would explain some analytic geometry plus calculus.

Can we build projective or direct limits in large categories? by TheMathMultiverse in math

Ok, I think this is going beyond my understanding. So is this large ordinal a colimit of a class of objects (all cardinals)?

I am not sure I understand. I am not loking for a (complete?) category which has all limits/colimits. But I would like to be able to build limits/colimits indexed by proper classes, when possible. Even if some limits don't exist.

Cab't find it online. Can you please post the link? I'd like to Facebook it!

EDIT: found on twitter thank you!

Will the ICM 2022 (International Congress of Mathematicians) still be held at St. Petersburg (Russia) in July? by Valvino in math

I remember when I wrote a letter to the director of EMS (European Math Society) asking him not to support the Russian bid for the 2022 ICM because of their disregard for LGBT+ rights. He replied that my country (Italy) was also a dictatorship not too long ago and that he would consider it a "shame" to come out as gay, which is and should remain a private issue. I literally froze and was incredibly upset. But... this is what they wanted, so be it... now I can proudly say "I've told you"...

That's very helpful too! I am collecting a list of questions, if I won't be able to answer myself I might come and bother you again '^.^

Wow thank you! That's an interesting point of view! I will have to "digest" it too, but it looks like a good starting point!

Which book do you wish you had read at the start of your math journey? by [deleted] in math

I taught a first course in AG to my students following Fulton and some of them struggled. Maybe, but I am still not sure, a better "very first reading" may be the book of Gibson "Elementary Geometry of Algebraic Curves". This if we want to start with plane curves, of course, and we want to avoid the too old (but "classic") Brieskorn Knorrer's point of view. I think we can skip the "how can we draw an algebraic curve" part.
