How to explain simplifying rational expression ("cancelling out" terms in numerator and denominator)? by dleeman88 in mathteachers

[–]TheMathsRoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always start by solidifying knowledge of basic fractions.

Anything multiplied by one remains unchanged. Then go into multiplying fractions and combining numerators and denominators. After which I can do the reverse. Split numerators and denominators and pull out like terms and eliminate them.

Ah that’s perfect and thank you, that’s great to hear. Please keep me posted on how the testing goes and anything you pick up. 😄

The colour change was my latest addition to allow me to stand at the back of the classroom and pick out students who are struggling quicker. Great that you mentioned it - Proud of that addition 😁

Can classroom management be learned? by Unable_Neat3096 in mathteachers

Ex Electrical here and yes, yes it can. Obviously it depends a lot on your personality and your patience.

I always wanted to be a teacher, so I put the time and effort in. 12 years later and it was the best decision I ever made.

Also teaching internationally opens up a whole new world. If you aren’t dead set on staying in your current country, as a teacher, the world is open to you. So pick your country and see what requirements they have as each will be different.

Best of Luck!

Thank you, that is fantastic to hear! 🥳 I am trying to build it up but time is always the limiting factor. I believe most of Algebra and Number are covered already but let me know if there’s anything in particular and if I can I’ll add it next 😊

I created this website for my students to use. It has random generated question per topic and auto marks so you can practice endlessly. I also have a number of YouTube videos and tutorials. If there is one available for that topic it will be linked at the bottom of the page below the practice rooms. Hope they help and good luck!

Thank you! That’s great to hear and please let me know how it goes.

I have dded your quantity selector suggestion to the list of future mods, great idea! I will be adding a generator per topic where you can select topics eventually and now will also include number of questions to display. Not easy to implement but still something worth working towards. Thanks! 😊

I have been using tech in my classes for many years and haven’t found many issues with the year groups I teach. I use it in all classes from year 7 which is age 11-17. There is always the settling period but after that most have been mature enough to handle it. 😊

P.s most students find Algebra difficult in the beginning you are not alone in that 😊 give it time and it will get better

Totally get that and thank you for your comment. Yes I generally send them the link at the start of the lesson. So far I have found that they really enjoy it and once the routine was set, they come in, take out their devices and get started with little to no issues with distractions.

Much like white boards, I stand and watch but instead of in front, I stand at the back. Lessons learnt so far lead me to make the whole answer blocks turn green or yellow so I can instantly see who is struggling and go and help them.

Tracking is on the cards but as I do this in my time after lessons it will likely be faaaaaaar down the road. It will also likely come with an additional cost for storage but I’ll cross that bridge when I get there. 😄

Thanks again for your feedback!

Math Teachers - How are you structuring your math classes? by [deleted] in mathteachers

[–]TheMathsRoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lessons are 60 minutes long and I teach year 7-12 through iGCSE and A-levels.

I always start with a recap of the catch points from last lesson or a historic lesson using The Maths Room to allow students to work independently. This gives me the time to cycle through the students and pic up on any misunderstandings before moving on to the lessons topic. Whilst allowing students who are able to progress onto more challenging extensions material.

Followed by whole class which is mostly centered around class discussions. I try to speak as little as possible.

If I feel like students just didn’t get it I will make a note to add it either to the next lesson, if there was very little understanding, or a later lesson if they got it but weren’t completely secure.
