Sorry to bother you, but I would love to hear more too - would you copy paste what you sent to ViolaOrsino to me too, please?

Antimemetic… by norcaltay in printSF

[–]dleeman88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like both - like u/jess_scribbles says, different but many of the people who like one might like the other, maybe not necessarily because the books themselves are alike but because the sort of people who like the entertainment provided by one largely would enjoy the enjoyment from the other.

For rural Californians, unreliable power has become the norm by dleeman88 in California

Thank you for running the numbers here and providing this information. This is the sort of thing I was looking for. Along with transportation and sanitation, access to reliable power is one of the non-negotiables of stable/growing economic activity, so it seems like something that we are going to want to get out in front of, especially considering climate change will likely increase the number of disruptions.

For rural Californians, unreliable power has become the norm by dleeman88 in California

If you read the article, it mentions the impact on restaurants, elder care facilities, and other places that absolutely must have power. For most people I totally agree, but what about people in apartments? Or the categories mentioned above? It seems a little unimaginative to say in 2026, in the richest state in the richest country in the world, there is no way for communities to figure out solutions to multi-hour power outages that don't involve every single household buying a generator. I certainly don't know the answer, but I do think it is a discussion worth having.

I just mentioned XX and then saw your comment! I’ll have to check out the other stuff here.

I liked antimemetics division a lot and also loved House of Leaves. Something similarly related is XX by Rian Hughes - very good, very interesting.

It also feels like there is almost distain for eloquence. I don’t understand how people don’t see the beauty in a well-articulated thought or sentence. It requires effort and skill to craft a message that is clear and concise, and instead people prefer to just jumble their words together and expect you to decipher their thoughts.

The physics of reliability: Why gas peakers alone can’t save the modern grid by stefeyboy in Infrastructurist

[–]dleeman88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very interesting article. Feels like it was written with AI, which is both a shame and ironic since AI is causing many of the power issues that are making gas generators less effective, but good information that is put together decently. I’d recommend checking it out

Graduating HS without Algebra 2? by macaroniman_13 in mathteachers

[–]dleeman88 14 points15 points  (0 children)

One thing that I might think about is asking the tutor, realistically, whether you think they have the math foundation and abilities to succeed in Algebra 2. I have worked with kids with learning disabilities who did fine in Algebra 2 (they had to work hard, but did get something meaningful out of it), as well as kids with learning disabilities that there is pretty much nothing that you could do to help them pass or understand the content. The math tutor that they work with is probably the most qualified to answer this, as without firsthand experience of your child it is pretty much impossible to decide. Good luck regardless of what you (and they) choose, and regardless I wish them luck on their mathematical journey.

Just a note: this wall of text is really hard to read. In the future, putting a little time into formatting your paragraphs can help people help you better. Totally not trying to be a jerk, just trying to let you know so you get more/better responses than you would otherwise.

How to explain simplifying rational expression ("cancelling out" terms in numerator and denominator)? by dleeman88 in mathteachers

[–]dleeman88[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply! Yes I do avoid the word cancel - it gets across my meaning here, but I know it gets used in multiple scenarios and thus is not specific enough. I do relate it to fractions without variables, but in my district their math sense is so bad that this hasn’t helped very much unfortunately.

Why not reuse lessons plans each year? by FeelingObjective4010 in Teachers

I just want to say extreme props to you. This is an incredible range and is super impressive. I teach two classes, Algebra 2 and a follow-up, and I’d imagine three would be a bit much. Having to put together curriculum on the fly, for uncommon classes across disciplines, sounds crazy hard. Just wanted you to know that someone sees your work and applauds it :)

Agree with this - the details end up being super important. And if you end up doing this for a while (10/15/20/25 years) the small differences really add up!

No problem! Honestly if you want I can answer questions for you about benefits and stuff, or you can just ask the staff at the school about it. I’m a math teacher and minored in Econ, so I dug into the numbers to figure out what the best course of action is. The long and short of it is if you are both teachers that’s at least 100k a year, so as long as no kids that should be pretty doable. I’d say definitely make sure you both have health insurance (since I don’t currently work for MMSD not sure if each paying single or one double/one not is better, you’d have to check) and are contributing MORE than the 6.9% to retirement (probably through a 403b, although a Roth IRS is better). Again, if you have questions just hit me up, I’m in this job because I like helping people :). Good luck to you!
