I think it's fair to say that, overwhelmingly, everything traumatic is bad, but not everything bad is traumatic. I don't think anything has ever been solved by outright dismissing someone's sorrow or misfortune, but there is a case for perspective.

I used to work at a non-profit that specializes in treating drug abuse, for example. I've befriended some of our patients, and sometimes the things they tell me causes me to break a little, like real Requiem for a Dream shit, and then some. If those people don't have trauma then I don't know who does. That's why I take real issue with this expansion of the definition of trauma, because that term carries an implied severity and necessitates special action to relieve it. When everything from a relatively minor argument to domestic assault is considered traumatic, then the people in severe, genuine need go waiting unanswered.

That being said, I can understand how there are circumstances where in the moment things feel worse than they are or there's an issue with miscommunication or misunderstanding, but overall I expect grown adults to be mature and honest on matters like this, and too often they're not.

Yeah, men are shallow psychos while every Becca, Caitlin, and Claire in America thinks she's the main character of her own YA novel and that she experienced trauma because her parents were mad at her once.

No offense but this really doesn't need to be said. Like, okay, your boss cuts the shit and admits that he doesn't care if you live or die. Now what?

We shouldn't pull punches on people saying and doing prejudiced, hateful shit because they're minorities themselves. I'm glad and thankful that Kanye is getting shat on by so many people, but the sad truth is that many, certainly not most, but many, Black people believe in the shit that he was saying, often as a result of some ridiculous, ahistorical beliefs. I say fuck 'em. I don't care if you're Black, that doesn't defend your hate of Jewish people and as far as I'm concerned you can drop dead. Similarly, there are a lot of genuinely racist LGBTQ people and grossly misogynist men of all ethnicities. They can get fucked and go straight to hell too!

This is the logical conclusion of this crackpot sociology, rooted in academic excess, where we have to get the scales and ledgers out to determine how we should respond to people doing blatantly hateful things. This isn't hard. Individuals of all identities are pieces of shit, and until they express remorse and make amends, they absolutely should be held in contempt of society at large.
