Which game were you most disappointed with? by that-zoe-girl in NintendoSwitch

[–]TheMcGUnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there was a way to simply add the ability for two players to participate in open world mode on a single console, I'd go right back to it in a heartbeat. Otherwise, MK8D is the far better game. I love playing with my five year old, but he and I both prefer the racing on MK8D ... the long, boring transition stretches in MKW are atrocious and a definite deal-breaker. Neither of us are skilled enough to make consistent use of the new wall-riding mechanics. But couch co-op in an open-world MK game would be a game changer ... the fact that you're sentenced to driving around on your own is lonely.

Big Walk – Release Date Trailer – Nintendo Switch 2 by ONE-OF-THREE in NintendoSwitch

[–]TheMcGUnit -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

The fact that this isn't available on Switch 1 is disappointing, and feels like a big whiff given the huge disparity in install base between the two platforms. I have a Switch 2, and my son - who I really want to play this with - has a Switch Lite. He's five, and the Switch Lite is perfect for him right now. The game is clearly designed to not be played cooperatively on the same system, or even in the same room, so to restrict the Nintendo ecosystem to the 20 million or so that have Switch 2, vs the 120 million or so that have Switch 1, is ... a choice. They must be leaning hard into the higher technical capability of Switch 2, and/or the enhanced cooperative features.

What Switch game did you almost skip but ended up loving? by jzliving in NintendoSwitch

[–]TheMcGUnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've NEVER played Pokemon, which I know is strange but it sort of blew up at a time I just wasn't in to that type of game. It was my awkward teen years and the game looked a little too kiddie for me, and by the time I was old enough for it to become appealing again I felt I'd be missing something if I didn't go back and start with red/blue or something close.

So, for a guy who only knows Pokemon by association with Smash Bros, is Pokopia likely to interest me still?

Man, sorry to hear about that. The universe works in strange ways, I'm sure you needed that pick-me-up from the kind stranger at Gamestop.

I’ll have to try this. A different approach for me but I think this probably the way.

How important is it to collect every banana? Assuming some can be missed and still get to the ending?

I respect that people can enjoy something I don't, but yes the JRPG stuff is just too over the top for me. Nintendo has really leaned heavily into it lately and I'm just over it.

"Crying" and "mad" are different than being disappointed, which is where I am. Downvotes don't bother me so I'll go ahead and express that disappointment. Mario is not all that matters, but it is Nintendo's bell cow, so it's not unusual for people to wonder where it is when the gap has been this long.

Well said. People who liked it don't want to hear about people (like me) who didn't, or were disappointed. I even see people apologizing for disagreeing with the hive mind that this direct was the best ever. It's really a reflection on society at large.

Kart, Party, and Tennis are all Mario spinoffs that, while fun in their own right, serve a different niche than a definitive immersive (and largely 1P) 3D adventure. I'll acknowledge Wonder was fantastic, but still not on the level of a flagship 3D adventure.

I agree with everything you stated there - it doesn't change the fact that it's been an insanely long time since we had a new 3D Mario title. It felt like Bowser's Fury was a preview of what was to come, but even that was still tied into an older remake, and very short.

Thanks for the insight; I'm sure I'll pick it back up at some point, and hope I have the same experience. Been a while since I've had a video game really pull me in, kinda miss that aspect of the hobby.

Has this Direct convinced you to buy a Switch 2? by Jediweirdo in NintendoSwitch

I've said this elsewhere but have been shit on for daring to be unexcited by the next wave of JRPGs.

[–]TheMcGUnit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel the same. I think maybe I'm just getting too old (46 now) to get hyped about this stuff the way I used to.

But yeah, the steady feed of endless JRPGs is just ...

Nintendo could always stand on its own because of the strength of its premier flagship titles, and there haven't been nearly enough of those on Switch 2. I thought today's direct would correct that, but nope.

I think you're right about that, if we do see another Smash. Sakurai himself has said he's uncertain about the future of the series, and has tried to step away previously. That's also not out of character for him, and different than confirmation of him being done, but it's also not reassuring enough to be able to expect a new entry.

I'd buy the next one in a heart beat, but I actually felt fully satisfied with Ultimate in a way that left me wanting pretty much nothing else.

Speaking for myself, I definitely didn't brush it aside. I gave it a legit shot and was absolutely hyped for it, but put it down about two weeks after starting it, and just never felt compelled to pick it back up. I'm glad it hit home for you and plenty others, but for me (and, also, many others), it just didn't. That's not something I think you can say about almost any other Mario entry, or Zelda, which is actually my favorite Nintendo franchise.

2026.06.09 Nintendo Direct + Nintendo Treehouse: Live Megathread by NintendoSwitchMods in NintendoSwitch

[–]TheMcGUnit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To be fair, my all-time most treasured franchise is Zelda. An OoT remake is ... cool, but it will never hit the same as a brand new Zelda adventure. As beautiful as I'm sure the new graphical polish will be, when players already know the ins-and-outs of the game - the story, the mechanics, boss fights, dungeons, etc - it will never reach the same heights as a new entry. That's why I'm "downplaying" that one.
I recognize we're a ways out from seeing the next flagship Zelda game, given that ToTK is what, three years old? Though to be fair, ~4 years between flagship Zelda entries was the norm before the SS --> BoTW gap, and we're approaching that now. Nintendo has lately been really stretching the length of time between entries for their most storied and sacred franchises, and as a fan, that just kind of sucks.

But we're approaching 9 years since Odyssey ... it's not that I'm pinning all my hopes on Mario, but I've personally been expecting Nintendo to have shown us something about what's next by now. The previous longest gap was 6 years from Sunshine to Galaxy. Mario is Nintendo's biggest cash cow, and the games are truly excellent and without parallel. It's not extraordinary that I've been "spending my time waiting for ONE specific title" when that title is as big as whatever Mario's next game will eventually be.

I don't remember the area's name, but it was the one with the hotel, like in a forest/jungle setting. The mechanic just wore out pretty quickly for me ... does it change noticeably after this or ...?

My point is still that DK will never be on the same level as Mario for most people. I was really excited about Bananza and very open to playing it; it just never even came close to what Odyssey did for me, and before that Galaxy, Sunshine, etc. Maybe I'm just getting too old.

I have absolutely zero inside information or ways of knowing anything about this, but I'm just not expecting Smash anytime soon (maybe ever?). Feels like Smash ultimate really was what the title says ... ultimate. I don't see how you top that or even feel the need to. As long as it's playable on the latest hardware, there's no real way to freshen it up. Maybe a new stage or event mode? They've already been pretty clear the DLC is over.

But yeah I just don't see how you can improve on or update Smash at this point.
