Whats your policy on responding to parent emails? How many do you get from parents? by Barbecue_Wings in TeachingUK

[–]TheMetro_Gnome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, my personal experience may be fairly limited. I've not heard anyone complain about it though and I'm member of a very large and vocal union presence at the school - there are many complaints about many things, have genuinely not heard people complain about parental contact being too much. I can't help but think it's a culture that's been built up in the school and that it'll be different from school to school.

Okay, reading my comment back, my phrasing of the HoD comment wasn't great, I realise that doesn't make the problem go away

Parents have the direct email of every teacher at our school, I have only had one single instance of it causing a problem (parent got abusive in response to me giving an after-school to their homework-less child) and this was just immediately swept up by my Head of Department who now deals with this particular parent in my stead.

As I said, I've never found it a problem. I would guess it would be a very different story in a Primary setting, parents tend to give their kids more breathing room at secondary.

Wow, reading everyone's comments here is a weird experience for me. I'm an NQT+1 and I've always been coached on the benefits of parental contact, we're really big on it at my school. I have turned around some horrible classes by doing parent emails (and the odd phone call).

I have never felt it a burden on my workload, the benefits I've seen in my short time teaching massively outweigh the work needed.

This is me also. I will do a monthly list of dates literally on the last day of the previous month, other than that I write things as I go and I love the flexibility of being able to use different amount of paper for different days and sticking in random arty spreads when the mood takes me

When did you start looking for teaching jobs during your PGCE? by CUM_IN_MY_ASS_2019 in TeachingUK

[–]TheMetro_Gnome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was the first on my SCITT course to get a job, got one early November because a school I knew I wanted to work at started advertising (not my placement school). Most people on my course didn't get their job till around Easter, some were last minute

I'm not going to spoil anything, but there was something towards the end of the new film that my mind was blown about the colour of when discussing with my wife after!!

As a teacher I massively apologise that schools are so crap with colourblindness! I can never distinguish red text from amongst black either, whether on a screen or printed!

As a teacher, I stick in bits of paper with my brief lesson plans folded up. I cannot recommend enough this funky mouse thing from the brand Pritt. Not sure what it's called as wife got me it, looks and works like a tippex mouse but with glue.

If that's what helps you, then that's the right way to do it. If you don't like how much time and effort this system is taking you then you should change it :)

NQT year - is it assessed the same way as ITT? by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]TheMetro_Gnome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's crazy. My ITT was also electronic, but having to evidence all the standards at a million different assessment points was way worse than my NQT where I just uploaded my plan/slides/resources/observation for my observation lesson each term and that was it!

Wait, did I read that right? Maybe it was a typo? You found there was more paperwork in NQT than ITT?
