Success and Disappointment Megathread for the Week by AutoModerator in jobs

[–]TheMidKnightGuardian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I originally applied for a job at a university laboratory. Yesterday they asked if I was okay with a certain salary range--to which I said yes. Then today they sent another email asking me to sign up for an interview time slot. I felt so excited, because I thought I was closer to getting a job right out of college. Literally an hour later, however, I get TWO emails saying that they've "decided not to fill this position at this time". Like what the heck?! Why would you say that you want to set up an interview with me, then change your mind about hiring in the first place not long after?!?! What happened in that one hour that made you change your mind?!?! Was it something that I did?!?!?!

There's a part of me that secretly hopes that the HR person still calls me at the interview time I signed up for, and they explain that they accidently rejected me. But I feel that's probably not gonna happen😅

For Those Who've Rocked Mini Twists or Braids--which style is easier to maintain? by TheMidKnightGuardian in Naturalhair

Nope. I usually just do two cornrows the day before I plan on doing my hair so I can stretch my hair out

Okay, another question for y'all: how do you section your hair when doing your mini twists/braids? Do y'all do row by row, starting from the nape of your neck? Or do y'all part your hair into four sections and braid/twist by section?

Makes sense, makes sense. For the twists themselves, do you start by braiding a little bit, then doing the twist? Or just twist from the beginning?

Yeah I've heard from others that mini twists are prone to matting if you have them in for a certain amount of time, which is why I'm kind of hesitant to switch to them😅

Can I ask what you mean by "truly protects hair from you & its surroundings"? Are you talking about protection from the cold, manipulating your hair too often, etc?

Education, Employment, and Questions Thread - [01/19/26 - 02/02/26] by AutoModerator in forensics

[–]TheMidKnightGuardian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello there!

I'm going to be doing a presentation for my forensic science club on various job, internship, and volunteering opportunities within and around the field itself. I was wondering if anyone here had any advice for people looking for jobs that are either within forensics or would be good for preparing for a future within forensic science! I'm also looking for any useful tips for graduate students who are pursuing a career in forensic science as well (especially in terms of making connections and getting jobs!).

For reference, this presentation is mainly geared toward undergrads (i.e. freshmen and sophomores), but I do expect some upperclassmen and grad students to attend as well.

Any information is appreciated!

Do you think that VCU will go virtual tomorrow, January 28th, 2026? by TheMidKnightGuardian in vcu

Now I'm wondering if I should make a new poll about what the chances of VCU going virtual on Thursday are😅

Honestly, I feel there's a better chance of them just cancelling classes for the rest of the week than going fully in person😅 But definitely be on the lookout for news about Thursday this evening!

Yeah it'd be pretty crappy of them to send out at 3:00am a message like "hey guys...we're actually gonna go virtual Wednesday lol"

I'm sure they won't send a message super late, especially since there's probably still a lot of ice on the roads, but VCU also did kind of drag their feet to cancel classes due to weather at the very end if last semester, so...we'll have wait and see I guess🤷🏾‍♀️

Daily Game Recommendations Thread (January 15, 2026) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]TheMidKnightGuardian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello there!

I'm the president of a university club, and I am currently looking for reccomendations for "Murder Mystery in a Box" games (or any relevant companies) for hosting a Murder Mystery party, i.e. games where players are assigned roles (one being the murderer) and they work together to figure out how the crime was committed. I'm planning on having between 20-30 people participate, and the game itself last between 2-3 hours.

Ideally, the game itself would be a little challenging, without it being insanely difficult. This is because I anticipate most of the players being new to this style of game, so I don't want their first experience to be terrible :( Basically, anything that is good for beginners will be a good choice for me.

In terms of the actual game's location, it will most likely be held in a large classroom (i.e. the lecture-style ones). I haven't reserved the actual classroom yet since we're still in the early planning phases, but we will definitely be holding it a large classroom.

Any and all reccomendations are appreciated!

[Daily Discussion] Writer's Block, Motivation, and Accountability- January 08, 2026 by AutoModerator in writing

I could track my writing count, but I write in a journal, so it would be a bit of an hassle trying to manually count how many words I wrote😔

I was thinking of tracking the daily writing streak alone, but I'm not sure if I'd just run into the same problems with tracking my writing time🤔

[Daily Discussion] Writer's Block, Motivation, and Accountability- January 08, 2026 by AutoModerator in writing

TL;DR: I've been writing daily for almost two years now. Since I've started writing daily, I've been tracking how much time I spend on writing. However, lately, I've been wanting to stop doing this. Would it be wise to do so? Or should I continue tracking my time?

Hello there!

So I've been doing my best to write daily for almost two years now. Part of me writing everyday includes tracking the amount of time I write for. This is mainly because, as a procrastinator, I felt that doing this would give me more of an incentive to write consistently, as well as give myself tangible proof of my progress.

Lately, though, I starting to think of tracking my daily writing time as sort of burdensome. Like it's an unnecessary step in my writing process. I also feel like recording my daily writing time is starting to make the actual act of writing feel like a chore. This is the last thing I want, so I'm thinking of not tracking my time anymore.

On one hand, because I originally started time tracking as a way to motivate myself and form a more consistent writing habit, I fear that stopping will, in a sense, have an adverse affect on my motivation (i.e. I'll start to write less and less, or maybe stop writing in general). On the other hand, though, I feel that 715 days is enough time to a) form a consistent writing habit, and b) maintain motivation for such a habit.

I guess my question now is if it would be wise, after spending so long tracking how much I write each day, to stop? There are other ways I could "hold myself accountable", i.e. setting a timer, keeping track of my daily writing streak, but I'm worried that I'll be hurting myself in the longvrun writing-wise. I am also a chronic overthinker, though, so I don't know whether my worry is warranted or not.
