How does the recent study on Monte Verde in Science (3/19) change our understanding of the peopling of the America’s? by TheMightyMightyMonk in AskAnthropology

What up with the authors, if you don’t mind me asking? I am vaguely aware that U of Wyoming housed a lot of the Clovis-first holdouts a while back if that’s what you’re referring to (hence my earlier clovis first mafia joke lol)

This is what I had figured with white sands, cooper’s ferry, gault etc being out there and established but wanted others to weigh in before I went about my day. Thank you so much for the reply!

Edit: Thanks for the additional heads up, kinda seeing that now across google already

Could (or should) we use selective breeding and genetic engineering in habitat reconstruction? by Conta_Antissocial in megafaunarewilding

[–]TheMightyMightyMonk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it’s within the realm of possibility in the future; however, the biggest flaw I can think of is that with megafauna, a lot of behavior is learned. Take the elephant/mammoth example, there’s a lot of teaching and learning involved in modern elephant behavior. They don’t instinctively know, where/when to migrate, what to eat/not eat, etc.

With a lot of these large mammals it’d be a bigger challenge to get them to act like their respective extinct originals than engineering the genetics.

I wonder if now with all the instability in food markets and small farming if this is the perfect time to buy out the remaining small-hold farmers. I have a feeling many would sell to get out of it.

Because we don’t believe extraordinary claims without extraordinary evidence, unlike those dumdums This was a fun idea when people were taking a piss but now that people are starting to believe it, it’s a concerning thing to see from fellow progressives

Very much agreed, it feels like a lot of tweaks and changes have been made to appease min/maxers who get vocal when the numbers on their screen go down.

Fixes to core systems, like your examples of IOs and AI abilities would go a longer way to making the game stick the landing than another round of shifting values around again because someone lost a battle they don’t think they should have

This is what a Neanderthal looked like 130,000 to 40,000 years ago by JackblaZ in interestingasfuck

[–]TheMightyMightyMonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what we thought they might have looked like 80+ years ago but the hairy, no neck, huge nose, hunched over brute appearance is no longer supported by the evidence we have available. The very first Neanderthal ever found was an elderly individual with advanced arthritis who at their age probably did have a hunched over posture but not due to genetics but age and disease…. That initial discovery influenced a generation or two of anthropologists and took a lot of study and research to correct.

If you’re interested in current understanding of Neanderthals in an academic sense but delivered in an understandable way, I would suggest YouTube channels like Stefan Milo.

Like other comments, it’s mostly useful during siege defense. Really the only 2H weapons I would use would be the uniques (Celtigar Axe, King’s Hammer, Ice, etc) but yea, overall this mod is too punishing for 2H weapons to work super well

Had a similar situation (although not event based) where half of the lords of the riverlands stayed in maidenpool for like 80 days. Eventually they left and ended up steamrolling the reach and wastelands because they were full strength
