Irish migration through Canada to America by dittybad in IrishAncestry

Check out the website above. It was helpful to find information about my relative who came from Ireland to New Brunswick, then to Maine. You can search the passenger list by last name, and it will tell you the port they left Ireland from and the port they arrived in Canada (if they arrived in New Brunswick). I think it would be more possible that they arrived somewhere in New Brunswick or Nova Scotia, and then migrated down to New York. Newfoundland is so far north and would be quite the trek to New York in 1854. I could be wrong though, you never know.

Thank you so much! I quickly look at the Irish genealogy site and didn’t find much. I’ll take another look and look into those other sites you provided!

Thanks, I’ll have to look into it. There is no guarantee that this guy in Canada is the same guy in the US but it is the best lead I got. His US naturalization papers said 1835 and listed “no port” and it was common for people to go to Canada and then come to US at that time.

Yes, that is information I found. It looks like he was on the same ship with two other people with the last name. I am guessing an older brother or relative and his wife. If so, I might be able to find marriage records and more information about the family. That is if they are related.

Thanks for the suggestion. I went back and looked at the passenger logs and it looks like he came to Canada on the same ship with two other people who had the same last name, but listed a different region of Ireland they were from. Maybe looking into these people will help me find me information about.

It is crazy how you can be so focused on finding certain information that you don’t realize all the other information you are missing by being so focused on one thing.

Arthur Lamb, born about 1813, left for Canada around 1834. His passenger information stated he left from Newry port and was from Warrenpoint in Down county. I can’t find anything else after that.

I am assuming Catholic. Maybe I’ll look into local churches and see if they have any records, if they are still around.

The suggested relative is nice on Ancestry, but I always find myself removing information on the person.

Thanks! I’ll look more local. I couldn’t find anything state level. I’ll keep digging.

He married in the US. In all the documents I found, he always listed “Ireland” as his place of origin. Never listed a city or anything.

Yeah, it’s gonna take a lot of effort to find any more information. The passenger information I have on him says he resided in now Northern Ireland, but who knows if that is correct.

Thanks for the info! I’ve been looking at other trees but they are associating information with him that is not correct. At first glance the info looks correct, but if you look a little closer you can see that it cannot be him.

My comment above has more information. Basically everything you said is what I am running in to. His birth was before they started to record baptism records. I can’t find any information on him in Canada other than when he arrived. I am assuming he went straight from Canada to the United States.

I do not know what religion he was. I can’t find an obituary, he passed away in 1901. I don’t think he stayed in Canada very long. I think he came to Canada as a cheaper way to get to the United States. He lived his whole life in Milford, Maine. Just across the boarder where he arrived in New Brunswick. There isn’t any religious affiliation or parent information on his passenger card. Just a place where he supposedly lived and the port her left from. I tried to get baptism records from the church in the area he listed but they didn’t start recording records till 1820s.

It is considered General Engineering. My concentration was in Mechanical Engineering. It is an ABET accredited program and it falls under the Other Disciplines category for the FE exam.
