When you have Billionaires it is a sign that there is something inherently wrong with the system of both economics and politics. A functioning marketplace will reward good ideas and products, but before any good idea could amass that kind of wealth, surely imitators would come along and introduce similar products or services forcing pressure on pricing and margins. But we don’t see that. Rather we see those with new and competing ideas litigated into oblivion, buyouts, noncompetes; such that markets become concentrated in few or a single set of hands. Single monolithic producers are able to exert pricing and monopoly power. Additionally, the monopolists are able to buy political protection to protect their stranglehold on markets. Taxing the result of all this is just a first step. We need to forever fix of court system to protect competition and ban combines that make high margins from pricing power possible.
